Wondering if anyone has info or thoughts on running a v8 turbo 700 auto without the wiring and computer?
as you well know red Barron has gone for a emu run, so throw it on his back and no problem, no wiring no computer,
although he has wiry legs and the computer in his head don't work too well. But at least its gone for a run.

I have the same transmission behind a carby 350 chev in a 1986 volvo
the answer is YES;- the late camaro's run a th700 trans with no comt or wireharness, so did the very early VN ? i think.
I run a 1990 350 TPI TH700 and they work well

VN or VP V8 are cable TH700.
No computer in sight.

"Think of it as an Aussie from the outback. Maybe he can’t quote Shakespeare. Maybe he’s never heard of Terence Conran. But he can smash all the teeth clean out of your mouth with a single punc
VN-VP's do have a TV cable, but the ECU controls the lock-up torque converter.
Ya all kinda right.....the Vn onwards used the ECU to activate the torque converter clutch lock-up at cruising speeds ie....72kmh upwards at a steady throttle.Throttle position and trans pressure and the vehicle speed sensor all dictate locking and unlocking.
In oldholden speak....you can just wire up a manually activated switch to lock and unlock the converter.
The switch is a MUST to control the cooling of the trans and the other MUST is the proper adjustment of the throttle valve cable or you will fry the tranny.
Do a search on T700 lock-up
As Monaro308 says, you are almost right, as long as the transmission is a TH700-R4, also known as a 4L60. These transmissions will function with no electrical control, but you do run the risk of overheating the transmission if the lock-up torque converter is not made functional.
The story changes if the transmission is a 4L60-E. These were fitted to VR Commodores and later. If you try to run one of these without a computer then you will have 3rd gear only, thats it.
Basically, make sure you have a 4L60 (VN-VP transmission) and not a 4L60-E.
In regard to the VN auto using no electrical control, how do you connect the speedo? I have a T700 (I think) with an electronic speedo connection. Is there an adapter to connect to my original cable drive speedo?
i have t700 behind vh308 with vn heads injection etc apparently payne&townsend auto elect grafton have an adaptor to drive both
CRS do an electrical Splitter Box that allows you to run a Cable Speedo and still run the rest that relies on the electrical impulses sent by the factory wiring for the T700/4L60 Autos, the 4L60-E uses a different electrical setup to run a Cable Speedo instead of the Electric Speedo. You can phone them on (03) 5472 2853 for more info.
american cars had the th700 with carb v8 and spedo cables. check out american inporters, you can pick up a reco one for 1500.
i have a mid 1980's TH 700 R-4 bolted up to my Chevy 1986 LT-1 350. We had a new torque converter ordered to match the tranny. No problems but MY TH700 use's NO electronics. Witch is no problem as LONG as your shifter can surport gears 1 thru 4. My does not. ( Dam column shifter ) so we ended up with 2nd as L, 3rd as 2nd, and Overdrive ( 4th ) so D. Trust me with my motor bored over 30 and pushing 400 HP :) I dont need 1st gear !!!!
So in short GET the Torque converter to MATCH your Tranny !!!!

Hi can anyone out there help me out plz im doin a conversion and im putting a EFI 5.0l into a VK Calais and goin to run a turbo 700 trans. Im going to use a VS torque converter just wondering if it will it work? as i have bolted up the trans to the motor and there is about 10mm gap from the back of the torque converter to the fly wheel is there something that im not doin correct? As it will not pull forwards to do the bolts up can someone plz help me cheers
If the motor was originally a manual you will have to remove the spigot bush from the crank.
Motor runs but car will not move when any gear is selected. Has been sitting for a few years. It has oil in transmition.
sound like you have torque converter problem mal
I'd think she's stuffed and needs a rebuild. The bands, seals, O rings, etc inside have probably all gone hard and probably disintegrated when you tried to use it...
