Question about Macpherson Struts.....

Hello guys and girls!

I've been a busy boy doing up the front end in my VH wagon. All new bushes, ball joints, shockers, and reco power steering.

My question is this: while putting the new shockers in the struts, I could not get the top nut done up to the torque setting required. Do you have to grip the shaft of the shocker while tightening the nut on top? This may seem like a silly question, but I have never played with Macpherson struts before.

Any tips/advice greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Don't ever use vice grips or a pipe wrench on the shaft.
The best way to tighten strut top nuts is to use an impact wrench, but if you don't have one then just take your struts to a mechanical workshop and have them rattle them up tight for you.

Also make sure that you leave at least 100ml of hydraulic fluid in the tubes of your struts as this will aid with the cooling process of your new inserts.

you can actually use grips on the struts like most books recommend, but make sure u only grip where the shaft does not retract in...

Thanks for your input, folks, much appreciated!

I managed to get them done up pretty tight, so when I go to get the front end alignment done, I will get them to check the top nut.

I wish I knew about the fluid in the struts. I've now got them back in the car, and re-attached the rack and control arms. I am assuming that I will get a reduced working life out of the struts without the fluid in the bottom of them? Ah, well, I know for next time!
