Hi 1tunner. The engine you have is a 308 & came out of a late HQ Statesman. The 11 prefix refers to the Statesman origin, the QT means HQ/J/X/Z 308, & the 243608 is the serial number. The fact that it has a Tri-Matic behind it, means it could only be an HQ engine & the 243,000 serial number places it around late 1973 or ealy 1974.
The other way to tell a 253 from a 308 is the block casting number near the LH (passengers side) engine mount. It will have 253 or 308 cast in numbers about 40 mm in size.

Your engine is a 308 it is originally out of a Statesman. this is how it works.
your engine code as listed is.
11QT243608, it's the first for digits that give you the info you need.the rest are build number. The numbers 11 or 12 are code for Statesman fitted, (as far as I know the Statesman engines where the only one's to receive a number in front of the letter code), the letters "QT" mean 308cui, "QR" high comp 253 and "QS" low comp 253 V8. you have a engine that is getting harder to find that being a tri-matic block as most avalible now are turbo pattern (chev pattern). hope this help's you out.'
Hey guys, Alan is my name and so far today I've learned heaps from your site but still have a way to go. My situation is that I've bought an old Ramsey ski boat and am in the process of fitting another engine as the boat came without! I have picked up a 308, serial number 11QT837583 AND MY PROBLEM IS :- That the rear engine mount from the previous engine does not fit the new engine and I would like to identify it in order to order the correct mountings.
My engine was previously coupled to an automatic and the locating pins are larger in diameter and sit higher on the block the original engine. Hope to hear from somebody soon,

I can tell you that the QR prefixed 253's came out in HQ-HZ Holdens.
As yours starts with a "6" I would guestimate the it is late HJ or a HX engine.
There is a date code cast in to the engine block that will tell you exactly what day, month and year the block was cast.
It is located on the top front of the engine block. There is a little clock symbol near it.
It will be a 3 or 4 digit code with one letter in it and 2 or 3 numbers.
Post it up here when you find it and we will decipher it for you.
It won't tell you what model/body type it came out of (ie Monaro, Premier, Kingswood, sedan, ute, wagon etc) but based on the cast date you will know what series it was from ie HJ, HX etc.
This blue 253 is in my mates 81 WB ute It appears to be not the original engine so we are curious as to its origin.
The ute is a Kingswood auto with air and steer and a sports dash.

QT239764 is a HQ block from around Oct 72 Check the block near the water pump I think on the pass side for a group of nos. these will give you the exact cast date will look like 15H2 or similar

just bought a nissan patrol swb and it has a 253 red engine in it and i dont no to much about it.it has it has no wireing done and i was just wanting to no what the midle lead is for as there is 9 leads and i dont no where 1 goes.and i would also like to no if there is a way to wire it up so i can try start it just a way where you can ark acroos the starter motor to get it to start thankyou chris
My July 76 HX Monaro has engine number QT758*** with a April 76 block date. The out of order numbers are possibly Holden pulling blocks out of the production line to prepare them for the up coming ADR change on July 1st and installation in the new HX range.
Your engine fits in with my numbers I have 2 Jun 76 cars with engine numbers of QL723637 and QR757323 your car must have been early in the month of july the numbers seem to run at around 30000 a month for most of 76/77

Holden fan that engine is from around Sept 71 so its definately NOT from an HQ Sandman might still be from a panel van you didnt mention when yours was built.
HJ on auto only VB-VH somewhere in 82 or 83 they ran out of turbo boxes and went back to the trimatic pattern. All VN on 308/304 were turbo pattern.
VR prefix motors were both red and blue, up to Vx10xxxx was red then when the VC Commodore (1980) was released all engines were blue

Hi .Going by that engine number it's commodore definately with a VT prefix and being 446886 from my reckoning it's 1984 so should be vk.Cast date on front of block would tell you definately. Spotting the difference between engines there are some giveaways. Red ( HQ to HZ/VB ) has the engine size cast only on the left hand side of the block above the starter where as blue and black have it cast on both sides. There is no difference in blocks between early black and blue as they were running at the same time ,first blacks in vk 1984 VT prefix ,same engines blue in wb 1984 WT prefix. later blacks(304) have 5.0 cast on the block rather than 308. Sorry to tell you holden fan but its not a 350 Monaro, it is still a GTS only 253 or 308. If it were a 350 the model number would be 81837 not 80837. Get the rest of the numbers and we should be able to sort out the colour, trim and engine for you

Panel van: The Chassis no. was recorded correctly, however I have no idea where the Engine no. is meant to be located (HZ panel van 253 - with cast date: 19C6 - being 19th March 1976). The Engine no. listed for the panel van is showing up in the VIP check as: VR55142.
Sedan: I just did a check for my HZ kingswood sedan (253 - cast date: 14J8 - being 14th Sept. 1978) and the Chassis no. was recorded incorrectly as BHZ214373, which should be a 'S' at the end rather than a '3'. The engine number is listed as: QR7244 (is it missing a number?)

Whats the difference between the holden red, blue or black 308 blocks?
Im thinking this is the age or the date the motor was built.... perhaps someone could please shed some light.

As long as you use the correct manifold(s) to suit the heads, you can fit Red, Blue, Black, or EFI heads. They will all bolt on.

any way next question....i have a set of pre pollution heads which came off a QR prefix 253 block are these heads a hq,z,j,x ones? i cant find any no. or anything on the heads.i will be getting quite abit of porting done on these heads can l34 valves be fitted to them with machining?

I have just purchased a GTS and i am just wondering if this would be the original motor. The date stamp is C283
if not what year does this date stamp represent......
C283 means it is a 28 march 73 block.
If it is the original block for your GTS would depend on the exact build date of the car and how close it is to this casting date.

If the engine number actually starts with QT yes it is a 308 block. A 282xxx engine number is from around jan/feb 1973.
If you can have a look at the block on the side near where the starter motor bolts on it should have 308 cast on to the block there.

Nearly right with reading the casting date,
the months start at letter A, that = Jan.,
but they skip the i because it looks like the number one
so working along ,H is Aug. miss the i go to J
this = Sept. 9 month ,so that makes your block 21/9/76

it came with a catergory 2 cerfictate of engine modifaction, the eng number VJ571*** ive done some reserch and think its a 304 block aposed to a 308??? would that require a C.O.C.???
It also has had the fuel lines and pump removed. so that only L.P.G can be used. they have gone back to what i think are L34 heads, because of the slopped markings on the front face, and how easy it is to access the spark plugs. it then runs a quadracarbie and mpeco gas system...... My question is what will i need to put it to fuel injection?

I'm tipping it is from a VC. But if you look HERE.
It shows you where the date stamp is.
It's an alphanumeric date code cast into the block.
The letters are the month, only the letter i is skipped(to avoid confusion)eg:Jan = A. Dec = M.
The last number is the year of the decade the motor was built.

I know you posted this a little while ago, but yes all HQ to WB engines were made at the one plant in Melbourne and then shipped to the various plants for fitment.

The simple answer to this is no they did not.
A 308 fitted to a LH Torana was a red engine with a engine prefix of HT then the engine number.
The only exception to this was the LH L34 Torana engines that had a prefix of HZ then the engine number.

If it is QT 366417 it is from a mid 1973 HQ model vehicle.
If you have a look at the date code and post that here I will be able to give you a more
accurate time that it was made.

Unless you know the engine number and can find that motor. I reckon you will just have to settle for a HT prefix block that is date stamped to suit your cars build date.

That is a WA Police number
NSW is N#######P
VIC is v#######P
and so on
Just means it was probally stolen recovered or the number was removed and unable to be recovered

Yes I agree that it is a WA Police number, I have two here, 186 and 253.
But no it doesn't mean that it was stolen and recovered at all, it could be very likely to be a replacement block, these came unstamped until about 1971 in the case of XU-1's and some other models.
For these cars it was necessary to get the police to allocate a number to the new block unless some enterprising person decided to do it himself!
With V8's as already covered it was not uncommon to also have their numbers machined off when engine reconditioning.
Queenslands number is Q xxxxx P
I have seen a couple of police numbers for WA that start with W 9xxxx and the P at the end.
For comparison, I would be interested to find if anyone else has a similar numbered block?
And of course there are two numbers for NSW police in the case of the XU-1's NP ( Nasco Part ) and N xxxxxx P ( NSW police )
WT is WB commercial 308. So if you aren't mistaking the T for a P, WA police issue number would be my call too.
Here in Victoria the Police issued numbers are VP.

HT is the prefix for LH & LX SLR5000 and LX SS L31 including A9X (except LH SLR5000 L34).
That prefix/date stamp combo says the block is from a 1976 LX SL/R or SS Torana, and was cast on 18th June 1976.

Ihave a 1978/79 SLE VB 5ltr commodore with a M21 4 speed box factory fitted. The engine number is VT6767 also original. What can you tell me about it ? Please.
I've been told it is a L34 motor as it has genuine "B" cast heads on it again original factory fitted. I've been led to believe it was an GMH executive vehicle when new and the motor was a HDT test motor for GMH to assess for warranty purposes for HDT to build and still have full warranty by GMH
You would need to check with someone who is 100%, but AFAIK the B cast heads didn't come out until the VK run of Commodores. Before that, in the VH, and IIRC the VB & VC runs the HDT cars had X marked heads.
An L34 motor is prefixed HZ and was already collectible before B cast heads were even thought of. So what you have been told about the motor isn't right.
If you post up the inlet manifold part number I can tell you if it is the correct manifold that went with those heads. May not help, but may well indicate the assembly isn't factory.

More info required, a check of your compliance plate to see if it matches would be a good start.

i think eng1 is a small block and eng2 a big block because eng1 was bouth with an auto box from a scrapyard but the box doesn't fit on eng2 witch is much bigger at the flyweel side.

A 173xxx engine number is roughly from around the August September 1972 time frame.
If you want the exact day the block was cast post up the date code from the top front of the block behind the water pump and someone will tell you what it means.

This blue 253 is in my mates 81 WB ute It appears to be not the original engine so we are curious as to its origin.
The ute is a Kingswood auto with air and steer and a sports dash.

QT239764 is a HQ block from around Oct 72 Check the block near the water pump I think on the pass side for a group of nos. these will give you the exact cast date will look like 15H2 or similar

My July 76 HX Monaro has engine number QT758*** with a April 76 block date. The out of order numbers are possibly Holden pulling blocks out of the production line to prepare them for the up coming ADR change on July 1st and installation in the new HX range.

HJ on auto only VB-VH somewhere in 82 or 83 they ran out of turbo boxes and went back to the trimatic pattern. All VN on 308/304 were turbo pattern.
VR prefix motors were both red and blue, up to Vx10xxxx was red then when the VC Commodore (1980) was released all engines were blue

Hi .Going by that engine number it's commodore definately with a VT prefix and being 446886 from my reckoning it's 1984 so should be vk.Cast date on front of block would tell you definately. Spotting the difference between engines there are some giveaways. Red ( HQ to HZ/VB ) has the engine size cast only on the left hand side of the block above the starter where as blue and black have it cast on both sides. There is no difference in blocks between early black and blue as they were running at the same time ,first blacks in vk 1984 VT prefix ,same engines blue in wb 1984 WT prefix. later blacks(304) have 5.0 cast on the block rather than 308. Sorry to tell you holden fan but its not a 350 Monaro, it is still a GTS only 253 or 308. If it were a 350 the model number would be 81837 not 80837. Get the rest of the numbers and we should be able to sort out the colour, trim and engine for you

I did a Vehicle information package (VIP) check on my car (which you can get its VIN/chassis and engine number without paying (VIC only), any other detail you'll have to pay it seems. Go to: https://www1.roads.v...
Panel van: The Chassis no. was recorded correctly, however I have no idea where the Engine no. is meant to be located (HZ panel van 253 - with cast date: 19C6 - being 19th March 1976). The Engine no. listed for the panel van is showing up in the VIP check as: VR55142.
Sedan: I just did a check for my HZ kingswood sedan (253 - cast date: 14J8 - being 14th Sept. 1978) and the Chassis no. was recorded incorrectly as BHZ214373, which should be a 'S' at the end rather than a '3'. The engine number is listed as: QR7244 (is it missing a number?)
Could someone tell me where to find the engine number, so l can double check that the information recorded with the Vic roads VIP is correct and also could someone let me know what both my engine numbers mean.

there is no engine number on it, and it shows no signs of having been tampered with.
the cast no appears to be 363 or 3G3 with the dial pointing to the 3 position

It is common for Holden V8 Engine Numbers to be removed during decking of the block.
The company SHOULD have stamped the original number (or one of their own if they are allowed to) back on it before selling it.
You can find out the original number by having it X-rayed.
Your Cast numbers identify it as a 3 July 73 or 83 block. You'll need to find out the engine number to identify the decade it was made in.

hey there, name is joel. been reading this site for a while and thought it was about time to post something up.
Im looking at beginning a build of a 308 motor and stroking it to 355.
This will be the first motor i am building so i guess you could say im a noob to this.
I looking at soon purchasing the block to get things started and deciding which to go with.
Whats the difference between the holden red, blue or black 308 blocks?
Im thinking this is the age or the date the motor was built.... perhaps someone could please shed some light.

funny that i was told when i bought the block that it was out of a hj ute? i assumed that it would of been put in it not the origanal donk.

C283 means it is a 28 march 73 block.
If it is the original block for your GTS would depend on the exact build date of the car and how close it is to this casting date.

If the engine number actually starts with QT yes it is a 308 block. A 282xxx engine number is from around jan/feb 1973.
If you can have a look at the block on the side near where the starter motor bolts on it should have 308 cast on to the block there.

but they skip the i because it looks like the number one
so working along ,H is Aug. miss the i go to J

hey, just wondering if anyone can help me solve a few issues i have with my recently purchased vl calais.???
it came with a catergory 2 cerfictate of engine modifaction, the eng number VJ571*** ive done some reserch and think its a 304 block aposed to a 308??? would that require a C.O.C.???
It also has had the fuel lines and pump removed. so that only L.P.G can be used. they have gone back to what i think are L34 heads, because of the slopped markings on the front face, and how easy it is to access the spark plugs. it then runs a quadracarbie and mpeco gas system...... My question is what will i need to put it to fuel injection?

I'm tipping it is from a VC. But if you look HERE.
It shows you where the date stamp is.
It's an alphanumeric date code cast into the block.
The letters are the month, only the letter i is skipped(to avoid confusion)eg:Jan = A. Dec = M.
The last number is the year of the decade the motor was built.

The simple answer to this is no they did not.
A 308 fitted to a LH Torana was a red engine with a engine prefix of HT then the engine number.
The only exception to this was the LH L34 Torana engines that had a prefix of HZ then the engine number.

Unless you know the engine number and can find that motor. I reckon you will just have to settle for a HT prefix block that is date stamped to suit your cars build date.

Just means it was probally stolen recovered or the number was removed and unable to be recovered

Yes I agree that it is a WA Police number, I have two here, 186 and 253.
But no it doesn't mean that it was stolen and recovered at all, it could be very likely to be a replacement block, these came unstamped until about 1971 in the case of XU-1's and some other models.
For these cars it was necessary to get the police to allocate a number to the new block unless some enterprising person decided to do it himself!
With V8's as already covered it was not uncommon to also have their numbers machined off when engine reconditioning.
Queenslands number is Q xxxxx P
I have seen a couple of police numbers for WA that start with W 9xxxx and the P at the end.
For comparison, I would be interested to find if anyone else has a similar numbered block?
And of course there are two numbers for NSW police in the case of the XU-1's NP ( Nasco Part ) and N xxxxxx P ( NSW police )

Ihave a 1978/79 SLE VB 5ltr commodore with a M21 4 speed box factory fitted. The engine number is VT6767 also original. What can you tell me about it ? Please.
I've been told it is a L34 motor as it has genuine "B" cast heads on it again original factory fitted. I've been led to believe it was an GMH executive vehicle when new and the motor was a HDT test motor for GMH to assess for warranty purposes for HDT to build and still have full warranty by GMH

You would need to check with someone who is 100%, but AFAIK the B cast heads didn't come out until the VK run of Commodores. Before that, in the VH, and IIRC the VB & VC runs the HDT cars had X marked heads.
An L34 motor is prefixed HZ and was already collectible before B cast heads were even thought of. So what you have been told about the motor isn't right.
If you post up the inlet manifold part number I can tell you if it is the correct manifold that went with those heads. May not help, but may well indicate the assembly isn't factory.

i think eng1 is a small block and eng2 a big block because eng1 was bouth with an auto box from a scrapyard but the box doesn't fit on eng2 witch is much bigger at the flyweel side.
i need parts for eng1 but cant find any with out proper knowledge of the engine. im new to the v8 side
.
engine 1: was cast on the 22/7/1970 at 7 o'clock
engine 2: was cast on the 13/8/1975 at 3 o'clock
Engine 1: will be a Tri-Matic bolt pattern,
if the auto bolt pattern isn't the same on both.
Engine 2: will be a T/400 bolt pattern.

both bolt pattern look the same exept that on engine 1 the holes are closer together.
for some reason i cant get parts 4 engine 1 with out a vin number and i dont have the car.
and how do i tel what kind of auto box i have?
on the side of the box it has a little plate

i have a 49 studebaker with a holden motor with the #'s 527644 on the front pass side of the block behind the water pump i looked under by the pass motor mount and did'nt see anything thanks
is this a 253 or a 308 plz

easiest way to check is on the bottom side of the block passengers by memory it will either say 253 or 308 in the casting hope that helps

Note the year = 7. Cannot be 1978-1986 VB-VK Commodore.

gday i got some holden 308 heads with hdt stamped guide plates;yellow crane rollarockers'they also have got a x stamped on the front of heads;;part number of heads are 92032422 28k6 and they have square egr port i was thinking they were vl grp-a ss 1986 model;any help appreciated;thankyou;;nick350.

A 173xxx engine number is roughly from around the August September 1972 time frame.
If you want the exact day the block was cast post up the date code from the top front of the block behind the water pump and someone will tell you what it means.
Where to find the date code can be seen in THIS picture.

it's the wrong engine for a WB tonner anyway,
it's a red 308
and WB Tonners didn't come with 308's,
only Blue 253's or 202's

Definately 25AO and red motor 308. Could be 80 model with bodgy engine number.

You might want to check the engine no again as a 308 would be QT not QL, if its QT257196 then it will be from a non Statesman HQ built in Nov 72

5.0litre engine id
I have a wb tonner with a 'crate' 5.0 litre engine,has 5.0 on the side of the block so i am thinking commodore,the number on the side is N5U590910 the number above the water pump is 7C0,can anyone help,i know the top number is the date but cant work the other one out

N5 usually means a replacement block bought from Holden. My guess is 7C0 would be 7 March 1980..
