If you always tell the truth you only get in trouble once (per occasion) and then it's all over and done with. It doesn't come back and bite you on the bum years later. You also don't need to have a fantastic memory, trying to remember what story you told what person. Makes life very simple.

Lying requires mental effort, thinking up stories all the time. Mental effort = bad. So lying = bad. :P
Gotta agree with Circlotron in that it doesn't bite you on the bum either if you tell the truth.

TELL SOMEONE WHO CARES

Senario: You break a stud on the exhaust manifold. You head out to get a new stud. yet you return with a set of extractors. The wife says, I thought you were just going to get a bolt. You say, No love, it's wasn't a bolt it was a stud, but I got these instead. She says, They look a lot more expensive than a bolt. You reply, Again love, it's not a bolt, it is a stud. But all that aside, it will run better with these. These do away with the need for the bolts, as you call them.
Is this a lie?
Cheers.

Just a convenient fib! ( i personally would tell her it's a double ended bolt minus the head - two threads for the price of one -read bargain) And seeing women speak a whole different language, and are the worst offenders when it comes to these matters, I reckon she'd be miles ahead on points!!

Tell her, "just because the shoes are old doesn't mean you need new ones. So does that mean I need a new misses because you are getting old?"......Then run like hell!

Make sure you have you sleeping gear in the shed ready.

To the topic at hand....
Lies get you into touble. Simple. Bending the truth a little is ok in small doses, especially when telling a good yarn.

TELL SOMEONE WHO CARES

I had a "mate" once that was a compulsive liar, the funniest thing is he thought he was smarter than he actually was and his memory wasn't good enough as to know who'd he told what lies. Another mate was shocked one day when he told him a story while driving somewhere only to have the liar jump out of the car and while standing beside him proceed to tell some of his friends the same tale with himself as the main character...

He also that day proceeded to give advice to a guy that had broken his collar bone in a motorbike accident, spouting his experience with falling off motorbikes and getting back on...except he'd never even touched a motorbike...

Another time he had to apologise profusely to one of my mates and explain that the huge amount of stories and experiences he'd shared with my mate had actually not been him but another bloke (the bloke was coming back to Brisbane and would have found out).

There should be another level of liars above the word "liar", this guy would have been a bad one of them.

He He! Reaper!
Reminds me of a bloke that used to brickies labour for me and my dad! One morning on the way to work he pointed at a fence and said - "I helped build that" _ the old man looked at him and said, - how old are you? The bloke said 19. The old man said you must be reincarnated as I built that fence in 1957 !! LOL, needless to say, the bloke went to get the smoko orders at morning tea - and never returned!!

TELL SOMEONE WHO CARES

Many years ago, 1978 I think, I met this compulsive liar at a party. He was telling me that one day he was driving down the road in his FB van and it broke the diff. He stopped the car, as you do, and pulled it apart on the side of the road and glued the crown wheel back together with =araldite=! Then he went on to tell me that a while before that he had grown remorseful of his materialistic life so he phoned home interstate and told his mates to douse with petrol and set fire to both his Kawasaki 900 and his black supercharged 318 Dodge Phoenix that by the way had a ~5~ speed Torque Flite auto. Amazing.

I have encountered heaps of these idiots.
One good story I heard was from a chap who insisted he and a mate had fitted a 308 to a mini "just bolted it up to the gearbox" .... hmmmm.... minis have the gearbox built into the sump and share the same oil as the engine... at least that's how I understand it.... Oh of course when they were finished thrashing it the jumped it into a dam (evidence eliminated).
Another flogger i encountered recently was 20 years old and started telling me all about how he used to manage a nightclub back in brisbane. Fair enough thinks I, he's done well for a young chap. I'm an electrician says I. Oh yeah he says, I have an electrical license, I run a business as a builder when I'm not working as a welder. He was also the kickboxing champion of Queensland, used to be a bouncer at several clubs, and used to drive trucks for a living. Crikey, thinks I, this bloke must be about 75 years old to have done all this. Then of course there was the Harley Davidson back home, the Monaro, the Bikers who were out to get him cos he ripped them off, the driver's license he'd lost (somebody elses fault of course) he had to declare bankruptcy because his mechanical repair business was run into the ground by his business partner.... The kicker came when he said he served in the Australian Army overseas, had seen time in battle, blah blah blah.
How do these blokes expect anyone to believe all that crap???

Old saying: The only time a politician tells the truth is when he calls another politician a liar.
