Are you sure that the first letter is an "O" and not a "Q". If the engine number starts with "QL" then it is a high compression (9.4 :1) 202 cubic inch (3.3 litre) engine out of a HQ, HJ, HX or HZ.

The info that I have does not list any engines that start with "OL"

thanks brett, it might be a q i guess, i thought that after looking all over this site..

do you know the KW/torque? and gear ratios? or is there somewhere with all the info listed that i need??

this thing hasnt run in the last 5 years and needs 1 hell of a service! and i need to do it myself..

i hope it handles the weight of the transit..

thanks again,

Adam

I don't know Kw. But a HQ high comp 202 makes 135hp@4400, and 194lbs@2000. As for the gears, they are F**d, so I have no idea there.
Cheers.

This engine in HQ's and HJ's was 135 horsepower, in HX's and HZ's it was 88 kilowatts. I believe the later models were SAE ratings (but I might be wrong). ADR27A affected the power of HX and HZ's, I dont know how to tell exactly what model it is out of, maybe a serial number on the head or something. Qute (Dave) is up on all that stuff, maybe he can help.

As far as gearing goes, most passenger cars with this engine and auto had 3.36 final gears, maybe some 3.55. Tonners, utes and vans had 3.90 and 4.44

Ratios for the Trimatic are:

1st: 2.31:1
2nd: 1.46:1
3rd: 1.00:1
Reverse: 1.85:1

Dave is on Holidays at the moment, so will probably not be about for a couple of weeks.

As far as 202's go, they are more or less bulletproof as standard, the standard inlet will not flow enough to let you rev it hard enough to break it... Servicing is easy, plugs/points/oil... No hidden "gotchas" to catch you out...

Presumably the diff is the F@rd unit, not a Holden one so it. However is the gearbox a F@rd or Holden one? If Holden it will most likely be a trimatic, with ratios as listed above.

Does the engine have pollution hoses and cr@p hanging off it everywhere? This is the main difference between a HQ/HJ engine and a HX/HZ engine...

Victa.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness".

Thanks Campbell.

as brett said, it might be 1 of 4 diff models.. is there a way to find out? as they all have diff specs..

is there anything i should look out for or anything i need to know about this engine?

Thanks again,

Adam

As the motor has been transplanted, you may have trouble identifying it by the carb and polution gear. They may not the the correct ones.
I can't remember where it is on the block(most likely enginge number side)but there is a date stamp, or code on the block. It will tell you when the motor was cast/made. It will be in the form of two digits(0-9)followed by a letter(A-L)followed by another digit. The first number after the prefix in the engine number will also give a very rough idea.
As for diff ratio, try wiping clean the washer on the pinion, where the rear yoke attaches. There may be a stemp on it stating the diff's ratio.
Cheers.

Well it is a H series motor, confirmed by the prefix. So the decade can only be the 70s.
But yes, the code translates as you posted above.
Eg.05J8 would be 05/10/78.
Cheers.

The main way u can tell is amount of 'anti pollution' gear on the motor.
HQ had nill, HJ had a carbon canister, late HJ HX and HZ had the whole kit-n-kaboodle.

A 202 shouldnt have much trouble pulling a ford transit around. they are easy going torquey motors in stock form.
And if more performance is desired, very cheap to upgrade.

If its an Ex V4 Transit , it'll have short diff , Some models you could fit the Head out of a Ford Zephyr Mk3 for more relaxed hiway revs , don't know the year of your transit,if its a '70's model ?.For diff ratio check ; mark 1 tyre with chalk & the propshaft say at 9 o'clock, leave 1 wheel on the ground & jack up 1 back wheel , turn the tyre through 1 full revolution & count the number of times the propshaft rotates. If you can hardy revolve a wheel with one on ground, its got a good slippery diff in it.If you jack up with both wheels of the ground & turn tyres, you may get a false reading (if open wheeler diff) as the whole Hemisphere will rotate, but the side & spider gears won't.
Have a llok at the back center of the diff & see if it has a removable place or a smooth pumpkin shape with no plate (looking from rear)

If its an Ex Falcon 6 transit,it may have a BW (Borgwarner diff, like some valiants) so check what your running 1st.

If you want a Good upgrade for cruising on the Transit 202 red 6 - fit an original cam/lifters out of early HQ/Late LC Torana 173ci - they had 186S Cams in them,(or if can't find, a Blue Engine Stk cam:similar specs to 161S/186S) team that with a Holden Varijet 2bbl Carb (ex early commodore) with adaptor plate on say a Cain/Torco/Hardiman 2bbl manifold, & you'll have a good running combo , more economy & power than any 350cfm holley.

This applies to other setups on a budget too.Cheers
