Stuck in 2nd (3spd man)

Hey everyone. just got back from a quick trip to the coast to find my HJ with a flat rear tyre and a busted gearbox (whoohoo!!). let me mention, i also bent the rear bumper which the old car jack when trying to put the spare on. Quite annoying. Anyway, the problem now is that its stuck in 2nd gear while the stick is in the neurtal position. the clutch works which is nice as i could still drive it if necessary but ive tried to shake it into gear and it wont budge. ive got a red 202 with a trimatic column shift. if anyone knows what the problem is or how to fix it, i would certainly appreciate some comments on the matter. ive got a Max Ellery repair manual and i hope it has somthing in it for me when i give it a bash at fixing it tomorrow...

Thanks

As you have a clutch can we assume you have a manual shift not a Trimatic ???,first place I would look is the rods and joints/nylon bushes off column in front of firewall, old = worn or bent, either way can jam up and give trouble, you should be able to free up as temp measure till it happens again but will need repair sooner or later.

yeah sorry about that.. its a manual column shifter. I think i call it trimatic by accident sometimes. anyways, im reading this manual, and im not quite sure about what needs to be done to fix this thing. from what i gather, i need to adjust the linkage cables that connect the gears because the stick is in neutral while the gear is in 2nd.

I hope the problem is simple. As you say, it could be a a jam or somthing. perhaps its a case of forcing a few parts and its all sweet again. I doubt it though so im assuming the worst. Ill have to do some disassembling so im having a look at this book. Its pretty vague and doesnt explain much. i mean.. the book talks about making some kind of an adjustment tool .. #*& > ?. is this necessary!? maby im underestimating the task.

Im thinking.. maby i should just rip the whole 3speed thing out and put in somthing better. a mate of mine has a celica 5speed which he doesnt want. maby i should just whack that in instead. it would probably be easier anyway. ill have a look at some of the other posts about the topic before i ask about the conversion. i just hope i dont loose my bench seat ;(.

in the mean time. i need to get my car on the road.

Hi there, your problem is an easy one to fix once you know how.If it is stuck in 2 nd gear and the shifter is in neutral well it could be 2 things at fault.you should be able to leave the gear lever in neutral and climb under, and move the gear selector lever (the one at the rear of your all aussie is the 1 st and 2nd shift. If its in second move the rear lever until it is straight up and down then the viechile should roll.If this fix's it the problem is wear in the shifter. The 1st and 2nd arm in the shifter must be out of line but usualy its wear, but it is possible to get in one gear and if the shifter wants to it can come back to neutral but it leaves the actual lever at the bottom on the gear box still in gear.A very common problem with the all aussie shifters is that you can be in reverse and change into 1 st and the box just locks up because its in 2 gears at the same time. please feel free to phone me and let me know how you went. ok. 0427957626.

hi

Thanks a bunch for the comment. I did exactly what you said and yeah it looks like the problem is wear in the shifter and seems to be the smaller of the possible problems. I found i could easily change gear by pulling the levers. I eventually found neutral after first putting it in reverse and third gear (had to guess). This freed the stick and all is well.. took me about 5 mins all up.

Im assuming this is likely to happen in future. would you know what needs to be done to fix it up? I dont have much cash and was hoping i could do things myself anyway. is there a kit of some sort that i can buy?

thanks a bunch
