flywheel cover plate

While ago I had the car up on stands, and a mate of mine pointed out that my 253 was missing a flywheel cover plate. Supposedly u need this for rego, as without it the starter ring gear is exposed and it'll shred someone if u run over them (like they wouldn't be dead already). Its a pain in the arse to get hold of one where i live (gotta get it mailed) and I cant remember any rego check where this area of the car was given any attention. Wots the deal, and if i do need a cover could i bodge one up myself?

no car but want a rusty panelvan shell to fix, or a HR rolling shell.

Thats very generous of you, mate. i will seriously consider that, although it depends on wot the postage will cost as i'm in Illawarra NSW. If its only say 10 bucks more to buy it nearer, id rather not trouble you, since you or a mate might need it someday.
Thing is, when i bought the car in august it cant have had the cover plate, yet the bloke i bought it from put it through its pink slip fine just prior to me buying the car, no mention of any problem other than the headlight aim being out...

Don't know much about pink slips in NSW but here in QLD Safety Certificates are a joke, if ya know where to go you can get any old piece of [Naughty Pottyword] certified, buying from a dealer is the best way to get an unroadworty bomb with safety cert and rego, personally I keep my cars safe and sound afterall me and my family travel in them and what's more important. A few months back I got an HZ ute for one of my boys, with rego and safety cert from a backyard bodger in Helensvale, When I got it home and checked it out I could have thrown up, to think that some wanker could have no respect for the life of my family, had I taken it to the Dept of Transport the prick ( in Burliegh Heads )that covered the roadworhty would be in jail for sure, I don't want to see annual checks in QLD as that would only lead to the inevitable rorting and ripping off cash from us that love old Holdens ( or any other old car )as usual Buyer Beware, I've had my winge and feel better,

Back to the fridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi 8ch,

May have had the inspection cover on there when it was inspected, only for it to "fall off" immediately after it got home....

In WA, rego inspections (only needed when the car is unregistered or has had a defect notice put on it by a bloke in a funny blue suit) only warrants that the car is roadworthy when it is inspected. You can drive out of the inspection place and have another defect notice put on the car if you are unlucky...

Which reminds me...I got pulled up for a roadworthy inspection before a long weekend a couple of years ago...they had Today Tonight there to show that this was really good for reducing the roadtoll (getting unroadworthy cars off the road). I opened the bonnet of my V6 VS ute and thought that I was going to get a lickie (defect notice) because my power steer pump was leaking pretty badly at the time, but was booked in for repairs the next day. The cop looked at the motor and said "You've got a pretty bad oil leak there mate. Look at the oil all over your gearbox"! Of course, he was pointing at the front of the sump...anybody ever seen a V6 Commodore with a transmission sticking out from under the front of the motor? Me neither... There is something wrong with the system, me thinks.

Cheers...Dave

There is not much to making one if you're handy with a few tools.
The offer of one for free sounds good....postage would be extremely minimal.
Apart from rego requirements, personally I'd recommend everyone fit one of these to their cars if it's missing.
Leaving one off is a good way of getting stones thrown up into the flywheel teeth and crunching away on the flywheel and starter motor gears etc.
