overheating hx ute

Hey Guys
I am poor - want to know why? I am poor because of the bad advice that people keep giving me. I have a 307chev (with warm cam) in my beloved beautifully restored hz ute. The vehicle can run on both gas and petrol. But when on gas she heats up in traffic and dont cool down till rolling. To date I have: added an electric fan, changed the water pump, changed the thermostat for a lower one - with holes drilled in it, added a fancy quadruple core massive radiator and finally added a plastic flexi fan. Every time I embarked on each of these measures the gumball mechanics/shop assistants would tell that this will cure it for sure (where is the accountability - in my job if i got it this badly wrong i would be taken to court and literally sued for millions).
Anyway my next try will be to dump the mechanical fan, trawl the wreckers for a japanese twin sucking fan and shroud set up. Seems to keep the wifes twin turbo japper cool.
What do you all think? I have I missed anything? Advice and donations of large amounts of cash welcome.

I am running a 308 with a mild cam and I have got a 2 core crossflow rad from a commador. The temp dosn go over half. I was talking to a rad spec and he said if it does start to over heat he said to go to a 3 core from a new v8 commador and that will keep it cool. I hope this will help...'

I would be very interested if you find a solution that works to the overheating problem. Ive got a 253 in my HZ ute and have been considering putting in a bigger radiator because i have the same problem. Running on the gas in traffic is a nightmare, and on a hot day even the petrol isn't much better. Still at uni so don't have the cash to spend on stuff that won't work.

My old HZ sedan with a 202 (sadly gone to the big wrecking yard in the sky) always ran really cool, never had a worry.'

i sympathise with you. but dont waste big money on a radiator that was my mistake. Try increasing ht eairflow first. trawl the wreckers for jap fans and stick em on - should cost no more than $60 including fans and welding and a further $40 for a thermo switch.

if this dont work then look to pay the hundreds for a radiator.

good luck and stay at those books!

You have answered your own question.

Not enough air passing through the radiator.

I had the same problem with my HZ ute

so I fitted a holden fan from a Statesman $60.00 and bought a new shroud from Holden $50.00 and fitted making sure all the gaps between the shroud and radiator were filled by using aircon mounting insertion rubber $5.00 and as an over kill fitted a Fleetguard water filter $110.00.

And now cool as a Cucumber so much so that I removed the twin thermo fans.

Cheers

Good Luck

your car is running lean while stopped in traffic it has little to do with the cooling system i recommend that you visit a site like www.gasresearch.com
