Ping Ping Ping

hi all,

i own a 81 VH, the other day i decided to run unleaded, now wheni flattern her she pings alot???? do i need to adjust anything to make it run better, it idles heaps better??? and im running a fuel additive aswell to look after the head???? What do i have to do to stop this??

well this is takin a stab, but when my mum had her cortina we ran it on premium unleaded with this fuel additive, when we ran it on normal unleaded it didnt seem to run aswell and pinged just slightly, from memory this has something to do with the actual octane levels, im not too sure on it exactly so im not goin to quote any numbers, hope this helps

It sounds like you have a high compression motor...you'll have to run PULP or Ultimate98 or Optimax....

I used to drive a XF Ford *EVIL CAR* and I one day stuffed up and filled it up with unleaded. It pinged as well. If you listen to it, it will actually ping when you turn the car off. I dont actually know what the problem is but you have to get a fuel conversion done to actually run the unleaded otherwise it will always happen.

I was told this by a mechanic one afternoon when I asked about the pinging of the motor. Truely I think go back to using Leaded and speak to a professional and see what they think.

Hi Matty,

Must have been quite a while ago that the mechanic told you to use Leaded Petrol....it hasn't been available for a couple of years..at least.

OK...a very short lesson on Petrol...

Normal Unleaded is 91 Octane (RON). The RON stands for Research Octane Number...it is awarded (for want of a better word) when the fuel is tested and achieves a set of parameters (no, I don't know what they are...I doubt anyone except a petro-chemical engineer could understand them anyway).

Normal PULP is about 96 Octane (RON). Ultimate98 is 98 Octane, Vortex is 97 Octane from memory. I don't know what Optimax is...I assume it is about 98 Octane.

Can't bloody remember the Octane rating of LRP...I THINK it is about 95 or 96...won't matter in a year or two anyway, it won't be available anymore...

LPG is about 103 or 104 Octane.

The octane rating, in part, measures the available energy in the fuel and its "stability" for want of a better word. In motors with higher compression ratios, the fuel/air mixture is squashed more by the rising piston on the compression stroke. This results in higher temperatures as the molecules are forced together. If the temperature gets high enough the fuel/air mixture will explode while the piston is still rising in the bore, trying to push the piston down while the conrod is trying to push it up. This is pinging/pinking....Very few, if any, cars made to run on Australia's Unleaded fuel run more than a 9:1 compression ratio...and that is with all the knock sensors and fuel injection and electronics to control the fuel mixture and the spark timing. Put normal unleaded in a car originally designed for 96 - 98 Octane leaded fuel with points and a carby that throws roughly the right air/fuel mixture at the motor and it will pink/ping until the cows come home or until a piston comes out through the side of the block....

Higher Octane fuel also burns more slowly, so you can run greater spark advance...

BTW...Diesel motors do not have spark plugs...they depend on squashing the incoming air/fuel mixture till it heats up enough to spontaineously ignite (at the right moment, hopefully). Diesel motors used to run about 22 or 23:1 compression ratios...dunno what they can run with today's electronics...

As a comparison, Japans Unleaded Petrol is 100 Octane...

i found the same problem with my engine when i ran regular unleaded but when i put optimax in it it stoped as dave has said it burns slower so im guessin thats why it stops the pinging

Sorry Matty...I forgot you're up in the wilds of the Territory...There are a heap of Queensland comments I could come back with, BUT I'M NOT GOING THERE!!

I think its highly unlikely that anyplace sells pure leaded petrol anymore. What you might get is a mix of leaded and LRP or completely LRP.

I personally done like the stuff, as it has a habit of turning my plugs bright orange (due to the phosphorus contained in it) and ive heard it doesnt protect the valve seats as well when then engine is cold.

Thus something like optimax + additive is the best way to go.

And yes, the higher the octane rating the longer the combustion takes. (or the higher compression ratio u can use)
Slow Combustion is good. Fast hot detonation is bad (pinging).

If you keep running unleaded in your car you have to do one of 2 things or it will be dead in the next 5 years.
1. Get a fuel conversion.
2. Find your fuel pump, follow the fuel line to the catalitic converter, remove it and poke a hole in it with a broom handle, stick, knife who cares. it's one way to fix the problem, will work on all leaded cars but is only a band aid solution.
The best advice ANYONE could give you, if you have a leaded car, put leaded into it, if you don't want to, buy another car, derrr

Get a fuel conversion???? What the? The only "fuel conversion" is to put an unleaded motor in your car with all the attendant things that need to be changed, or get hardened valve seats put in your old head(s) to allow for no lead and you'll still need to use PULP because of your compression ratio.

Cars designed to run on leaded fuel do not have a catalytic converter. The lead is poionous to cat converters.....Why would you want to poke a hole in your exhaust (or fuel line) anyway??? I'd like to see any car with the fuel line connected to the exhaust (but only from far away...)!

You CANNOT put leaded in anything in Australia anymore as leaded fuel hasn't been manufactured for a few YEARS. LRP is/was generally pretty crappy fuel (in WA at least). It reportedly caused more problems than it solved...hence the valve lube additives being available.
