Early Commodore 5 speed

I have a 81 VH commodore with a factory Borg Warner 5 speed box. I have heard that these gearboxes can be quite rare in an early commodore and are a sought after item.
Right now I think the syncronisers are going, it changes hard between 1st and 2nd and back into 2nd from 3rd, and when I stop at lights or whatever and take it out of gear it is hard to get it back into 1st unless I use one of the other gears first. Would it be worth getting it reconditioned financially and performance wise? and what might it cost?

the gearbox in your commodore is not a factory gearbox and didnt come in your car. it may be from a vk but the vh only had one manual gearbox and it was a four speed. by the way it is called a syncromesh not whatever u called them. they are a good gearbox and u should get it fixed and you should be able to do it yourself if you know what you are on about

You are correct......not. I recommend that before you go making people feel silly with your guesses you have a wee look at http://www.southgate... so you can get your facts right. If you don't you're likely to only suceed in making yourself look silly. If you send me $15 I'll arrange an original VH 5 speed badge from the front guard for you.

Sorry matey but your wrong!! The VH was the first Commy to come out with a 5 speed but were only available with the starfire 4 and the 2850 six. In my experience these were quite a good box shift wise and gearing quite good, but have heard they wont tolerate any abuse or excess power (v8's modded 6's) and parts are now hard to come by. not sure if the the VK five speed is exactly the same, or a beefed up version of the same box.

my mate has a 173 5 speed in his vh does some good skids
some bad tappet noises though
probly from to many skids
