In reply to TAZ2 . Thanks for your comments . I am working on sending heaps of pics but still have not quite figured out how to start my own shed page on this site.(any help would be helpful..(?) ..)
If you keep your eyes out in the next upcoming StreetMachine Mag (August edition) then there will be another feature done on this car.
In a nutshell the car was built over five years . The car was a fourdoor sedan. There have been plenty of mag articles and I will edeavour to post the story board of the car on this site as soon as I can figure out how.
The doors are 6" longer and use canted Ute frames for the B pillar. Roof has been chopped 4' in the front and over 12' in the rear. The rear window is VW Type three Wagon tailgate. Side glass is /was VW Type Three Fastback , radically cut down and blended in. Gutters are hand formed. Roof has been sectioned pie cut style to reduce the crown towards the rear. Rear of roof is front of FE roof spun 180 degrees and blended into the VW window. Headroom is quite good still. (I am 6' 2") Grille is FE with 11 EJ overiders for teeth. Headlights are EH and 48 Chev truck combined with handmade. Hood has had a 3/4" steel conduit added to french the grille and hand formed steel extension eyebrows continue the edge onto the guards.
Tail lights are formed from FC door tops and have 1982 Caddillac tailights frenched in. Conti kit is the only fibreglass item on the car . This does not have a spare tyre inside as the complicated hinge mechanism tucks away in here. Rear bar is hand made using sections of two FC rear bars. Front bar is stock.
Rear skirts are EK wagon roof and have VW Kombi wheel arches blended in to meet up with the FC sill lines. The front edge of the skirts have acrylic hand formed lens and lights in behind for cruising lights at night. (they are not illegal as they are only 6 watts and white. We called them clearance lights and the authorities think it is a good idea!)
FE stainless trim added in stock location and Ek Ute trim added to the rear skirts.
Interior is leopard skin and vinyl. Dash is FE and colum is EK . FB strip speedo is used. Steering wheel is upside down FE with EK horn button.Seats are modified Celica front and modified FC rear. Sound system hidden in the glove box is Kenwood.
Paint is now Cyan Blue with ghost flames and pin up girl on the back.
(Car was previously green/gold.)
Motor is 202 on straight gas and is backed by a trimatic. Hr front and rear ends with Commodore booster and master cylinder acting on WB Statesman brakes on the front. Hadfield dropped stubbs help to make this possible. Rear end is HR with 2;78 diff and is assisted by air bags for that sill dragging stance when parked. Ride is comparable to the wifes VR Commodore.
There are countless mods not entered here. The car is all steel and not full of bog like some jealous dickheads claim - I have the bare metal shots to prove it.Yes ther is some bog on it - a car with this many welded joins has to be smoothed up somehow! But rest assured it has been kept to a minimum. All bog work has been done over an epoxy primer( PPG DP 40) which is an adhesion promoter.
This car is diven often and NEVER trailered. It has been driven as far south as Canberra and far north as Bunderberg. The next Summernats in Canberra will be its next long drive as I have been invited to bring it along again. One advantage(?) of a car such as this is the number of events it is paid to attend or travel expenses met at least. This means for me that a wide range of people get to see the car and I hope it inspires others to try and build something similar.
In time I feel there will be other more exciting cars built that will make this one look a bit ordinary - I invite others to try and come up with something just as wild if not better as I believe we have seen too many restored versions. The amount of calls and emails I have been receiving from others around the country is promising.
All this sounds strange from someone restoring a HG Ute I know - but there you have it .
Ah - found the ball joint paint.....(bloody restorers!)

what more can be said? I saw this car at the brissy street machine show recently, beautiful!!! There's also a pic in the new CRUZIN magazine. Hats off to you Andrew, it's good to see someone customising (relatively) newer aussie cars, instead of another 32/34 ford etc...

-------------------------------------------------
there are no stupid questions only stupid people

Thanks for the info Andrew.
It's a great blender job.....almost looks like a Plymouth blended into a Chev.
Might pay you to wait a couple of weeks till Rusty gets back from his romantic trek into Ailartsua and see if he will do a feature page for you same as the Sweet FX page.
Finished cars are nice to look at, but I'm more interested in the build up personally.
I couldn't work out how you had done the roof without going through major extensive metal forming processes, but now I can see how the Volks roof line was blended in. (obviously you need the metal forming skills for that too).
I guess in the final analysis you have created a vehicle that has a 1940's look at the rear into a 1960's look at the front.....very pleasing to the eye!

To 70 ute and taz2 - thanks for your kind words. It seems I am preaching to the converted!
Just to tickle your fancy I have begun the long ardiuos task of collecting cars and parts for the next radical custom. This is to be another FC and at this stage will incorporate an EK firewall and dash - complete with wrap around screen. Think about it - have you ever seen an EK crossed with an FC ? Of course you have - what do you think is on the back of FB/EK Utes? The need for the use of a sedan back is apparent when you want to build a convertable. (Which is what the next car will be.)
Any design ideas or in put will be greatly welcomed, as this time I want to include as many peoples input as possible- sort of a comunity project...
The strict theme that is to be adhered to is one of a Detroit AutoRama car. This means that ALL parts must be of GM in origin or resemble GM of the period.
Drive line will be redmotor of course and gearbox likely to be trimatic. If this sounds familar to the FC Custom then there is good reason for that. I already have the parts and I know the formulae works. Paint colours would be typical of the period and modern paint schemes, billet, etc, will not be considered.
To give a slight over view of what is already planned what follows will give an idea to what will come.
FC rear with EK front. Convertable - slight chop. Two door - with enhanced hipline and slight sectioning of the door tops to give the hips the looks they need. Heaps of stainless trim and chrome accents. 50 Pontiac tailights blended in to the 1/4 panels. EK rear bar (on the rear),EK front bar (up front). Overiders deleted and bar bolts smoothed off.FC number plate frames front and back. Radiused rear wheel arches using EK front wheel arches. Carson style lift off top -covered in Mercedes Harts cloth .Whitwall tyres on stock rims. American hubcaps or equivilant.
FC headlights blended into the EK front guards with sectioned and chromed(thinned) FC headlight rings. FE parkers. Grille still unknown -maybe Oldsmobile? or tube grille.? And of course the car will wear Holden badges - somewhere.
Interior will retain the EK colum and Steering wheel. I have a restored EK wheel already.
So as you can see guys try and form an image of what I have described here and see if you can add your own ideas. Remember - stick to the theme.
Those who doubt this car is possible to build then don't worry - I think with my track record its quite feasible. It has to happen eventually - I am collecting too many parts!
When this car gets off the ground then I will try and post pics so you all can see how its coming along.
Cheers.. Streetneat..
