Nice...Why?

It looks nice but why would you wanna do something like the to a beautiful ute?

vq dash in hq

you done a neat job fitting the dash i bet alot of work

That's a million percent over the bland original!

That's a million percent over the bland original!
I reckon it would be awesome to jump into something like that, that looks more comfortable than the old church pew'n pulpit interior of last millenia Tonners an Utes lol
All the mod cons under the skin with the exterior look that can't be beat!
So did you manage to swap over the later Aircon/ Heater etc?
I often wonder why some people go round it the hard way with splicing the wiring in together?
I have replaced a few looms in older cars and I reckon that is the smartest way of doin it, just hook up the necessary lights etc...
Mate that's one fine looking Tonner, ignore the knockers as no doubt with their outdated rattle traps with a church pew for a seat would have to be quietly envious, hell when it's done this well how can it detract anything from the original when its miles ahead of the old?
I LOVE IT!

PIG!

gees pig i didnt know u thught like that GO the old look lol
ps. no affence pig you are a top bloke

None Taken lol

What I'd REALLY love to see is for GMH to re-release EACH model from the FX thru to the WB Holdens, to run for the same amount of time as the originals ran for, but build them so they are faithful copies on the outside but with totally new modern interiors and mechanicals, wheels etc, even right down to the Two Tone Paint jobs like how they used to do but in new lairy Pearls and Metallics!
A Dream come true, alas it will never be lol
So I wait for others to build them and I have to admit that that VQ Dash looks as it it was put there by Holden themselves!
Now THAT'S how a conversion SHOULD look!
As if it were a Factory fitted option!
I LOVE IT! lol
Well he could have Riced it up with lairy Yellow and Black spray painted seat covers with Autometer Guages hanging off of everything, Monster Tachos galore and cheap Alloy Racing pedals with a horrid looking carbon fibre gear knob mixed with a blank Cheque for the tacky cheap plastic chromed immitation fuzzy dices from the local Super Cheap store lol
Trust me that Late model 'Factory' look has it all over a badly put together Riced in a Spray can interior anyday!
Then theres the bland boring original Dash....
Pass! ;{P

One Can Dream

So when do you write up the petition oinks? I'll sign it, do you count the GTS Dash under the Boring original dash catergory?

I have to unfortunately say yes in two cases, the HK and the HQ GTS Dashes, the rest had a great lay out of guages in the right spots without the bland look of the HK and the awkwardly spaced out arrangement of the HQ GTS Dash, the rest I think were great.
But then this is what makes the world go around and with different tastes comes different cars for a refreshing change.
Unless they're a faithful restoration, look at these cars at the shows, nice yes but really there to fill the voids.
At the last RNA HotRod Show in Brissy it wasn't hard to tell what was popular if you held the camera.
To try and get anywhere near the Kustoms, Wild Streeters and Retro Hotties was nigh on impossible yet all the old girls who were faithfully restored barely raised an eye brow amongst the crowds.
I appreciate an old resto but I can normally take in what's needed at a slow pace, but come across one of the above mentioned and I had to fight my way to try and get close enough to have a looksee and capture a couple of snaps WHEN it cleared enough for a fleeting second that is...
But I love the (still) current Retro craze with the motor companies building new oldies that reminds us of the forties and fifties style cars we dream about.
If only GMH could get in on the bandwagon and build a retro Ute like the SSR Chevy Ute come FJ Retro look *drools*
I reckon everyone would be trading their Commy Utes in then hehehe

oinks, ya reckon there would

oinks, ya reckon there would be a market for wiring looms for tonners with a battery behind the drivers seat, with thermo fans (ford el-au, spotty controls etc (and other accessories) all hidden and clean as a whistle, gts dash, etc etc as I will be rewiring my tonner from scratch soon and could measure and keep track of it all and make em on the weekends, all wiring will be broken up with water proof plugs that are mounted on the firewall instead of the rubber grommets.

Why not mate?
Stranger things have sprung from a simple idea...
Look at the guy who made his own Fuse Block to replace the VL Fuse Blocks that commonly melt, but I am not too sure about the Battery behind the seat?
Is this inside of the Cabin?
Is it sealed inside of Battery Box?
Is it vented?
The GTS Dash Looms could be a great idea as is a simplified Wiring Loom to clean up some of the wiring.
The Wiring kits for a specified set of Fans is another good idea, even a simplified loom for something like fitting a set of driving/spot lights, it is amazing how many people don't know how to wire up something as simple as a Relay and a switch to hook up a set of Spotties or even a set of Air Horns etc
Thinking up some simple wiring looms to suit specific items could lead to a small windfall for you if you do it neatly and correctly mate.
Try to find something that will be set in the way it hooks up so you will be consistant with the kit you make.
Good to see you are thinking mate, keep that grey matter working and you may just hit on a winner that takes off?

yea oinks as all the loom kit

yea oinks as all the loom kits i've seen are just as complicated as what your replacing ! all a bunch of plugs that each thing can plug into (including blade type fuse box) will keep it simple and they are real easy to make, so could have a few accessory plugs free that you can buy seperate looms for what your installing.1 plug on the drivers end and 1 plug on the firewall end and ya away.

yea the battery will be in a battery box in its own compartment, with the cabin space mod with the rear cab sheet metal, then 2 peices either side of the cab for speakers and drivers side will have a door which the battery box will be in, so venting it I'll need to drill a few holes at the rear of the cab and put a cover over the holes to keep water from getting in. hard to explain !its like instead of _| its /_| if ya know what I meen ! but only at each end so there is still space between them

it would be boring if we were all the same

i agree oinks, you have to appreciate the work involved in a resto, and the attention to detail... but you also have to appreciate other peoples ideas and out of the box thinking... id like to see some retro builds from gmh, aslong as they dont look like the pinky torana...

dash

I used the vq heater and ac componets.
Had to use older style compresser.
Only did it becouse it was going to cost aprox $600 to get the wireing put together and to do it this way only cost me the time to put it all together and i know have full power options and climate control.
The old hq wireing was prettey ordenary to.

VS dash in HQ

Hi

that is one great car !!

Did you take any photos of the instalation process
If not can you add somw notes on hat was involved

Maybe i should do similar to my HQ as it needs a dash pad, i was toying with a tin plate cover curved over the dash frame ( its like my VP ), then add sponge/padding then a layer of that parcel shelf material/padding that Clark rubber sells

george

vs dash into hq

No photos of instalation.
Had to remove all of hq dash and metal brackets includeing brake and steering mount.
all thats left is the panel that runs under wind screen.
cut and shape vn dash mount useing heater/steering/brake pedal mounts.
Shorten brake pedal ,mount vn excelerater pedal.
used 2 steering coloms top is vn,bottom is hq ,shorten bottom steering sharft.
weld and brace all mounts
cout holes for loom to go through firewall, mount fuse box ,cruse, ect as required.
did not have to change loom at all i wanted to run it under the frount gaurds but it wasnt loung enough.
once y have the mounts in bolt the heater box in ,run wireing, put dash pad on,hook every think up.
It took me aprox a mounth on and off to do it but i love the end result as it is comfortable and quik and good on fuel and i have the old hq look.
Cheers ragman8.

Wiring question...

Hi,

Great looking job.

I have been thinking of doing this but had a couple of questions:

What were the main sensors on the engine that were used for the dash and were they already present on the engine?
Does the dash need a computer to run?

Thanks,
