GTS dash problems (Oil pressure guage)

Hi all, on the weekend I finally got around to installed a new oil pressure
sender unit. I bought the unit from Repco down here in Hobart and it is
considerably larger than the old oil pressure switch. The car is a 1977 HZ
ute, GTS dash (oil pressure GUAGE).

My problem is when I start the engine, the gauge goes to full deflection and
then slowly falls back down to zero. Does anybody have any suggestions??

The old oil pressure light (connected up to the old oil pressure switch) in
the old dash worked fine...

Cheers

Jules,

Ive seen the various replys you got on the other forum, and it looks to me like an earthing problem. Take the tape off and see what happens. I've changed a couple of dashes over, and never needed to use tape to get a decent seal. Check the wire conections to the actual gauge as well. These dashes are getting on a bit in age, and sometimes the joins crack.

Good luck, Steve.'

Ok, after much stuffing around on the weekend Ive come up with the following.

According to my GMH manuals, oil pressure sender unit should read between 30ohms (low) - 180ohms (high) which mine does (roughly). Fuel and temp should read between 280ohms (low) - 40ohms (high).

Now my temp and fuel gauges are correct to those values but my oil pressure gauge is also reads 280ohms (low) - 40ohms (high). ie reversed to what the manual says. Confusion point 1.

I then checked the thermal type (yuk) voltage regulator and it regulates 12v down to 2v!!! this seemed to me to be a little low and on the back of the instrument cluster, it reads 5v. So I put in an electrical one (cutting out the old type) and set it to 5v, now my oil, fuel and temp dont work. Confusion point 2.

Does anybody know what the voltage should be regulated to??

Any other thoughts??

Cheers'
