Bathurst Torana's

Hi everyone and happy new year. I was given a box set of Holden DVD's for Christmas and started watching them through the week. The first DVD seemed to focus on the LC GTS XU1 but that made me wonder why Holden didn't race the Brabham Torana in the 4 cylinder class. The footage shows a Viva rolling over so I would seem logical that the high performance HB Torana should have been raced as well. It would have been pretty competitive with it's engine upgrades over the standard Torana one would think? Ford had their Cortina's going pretty well so why no Holden equivalent? Anyway the DVD showing the LH A9X's were a force to be reckoned with, according to the DVD Ford actually pulled out of racing because of them, seems Ford pulls out of racing frequently!

was the most widely awaited disappointment for holden dealers in the day. I remember dad eagerly awaiting its launch and the look on his face when we took the first drive...."how are we going to sell this with a straight face" was his comment.

What was wrong with them? wouldn't they be above average for the day?

Yes, for the day of the Model A Ford, they would have been above the average performance wise, maybe.
They were horrible little under powered things that wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, even the Brabhams.

Old is good.

Performance figures are about 1.5 a second slower over the 1/4 and 5mph slower than Cortina GT. The problem was that the move to the High Performance large car. Up until 1965 many small High Performance 4s would eat the Holden and Falcon sedans. Once the HR with 4 speed and 3.55 LSD came out and the Falcon GT, the 1/4 mile times dropped from around 20 seconds to 16 seconds. The Cortina GT and Brabham just could not compete. The major problem with the Brabham was it was too late. Had it been release 2 years earlier then it would have a different place in history.

Another one that as the poor timing is the series I VT HSV. High performance 185kW, then series II comes out and a standard SS has 225kW, imagine how pissed the people who purchased a series I VT HSV must have been.

if you have ever driven a hb torana with its 1200 cc of power then jumped in a 1600 cortina you would realise holden took the smart move by not being embarassed by entering.i would say an auto cortina(try and find one) would beat a hb.
