Diff?

Hi everyone!
I have bought eh wgn, with recent 173 (2nd hand) been put in. As i drove home, i notice that no matter how much i step on the accel all it goes is 50 m/hr max! (free way)
As i have not much mechanic exp, i wonder if it diff or the engine that it been change (from 179 to 173) or it even somethingelse!!
Please help as i want to enjoy my eh on the free way.
**If it diff -as couple ppl been said- what is the good ratio for it (as i sometime drive on freeway), hope i not askig too much**

a good ratio for your cruising requirements is a 3.08 ratio . enjoy your EH.

Wild guess here - might be an idea to check the brakes aren't binding.

Jack her up and try turning the wheels one at a time. You'll either feel it or hear it if they are rubbing.

2nd guess is the transmission binding somehwere; not necessarily the diff. Bearings may be rooted, there may not be enough oil in the gearbox and/or diff. Less likely as it would probably make a helluva racket.

Hi there,

Apart from the brakes and diff ratios, have you checked to see that the throttle linkages have been correctly adjusted so that you are able to acheive full throttle? Does the car feel responsive until you reach top speed? Is top speed reached with the accerator pedal flat to the floor or is there further travel but no more grunt?

If the original carby has been replaced with the 173 carby, there is a good chance that the linkage is no longer adjusted correctly. You may even need to source an original lever from an EH carby to enable the correct adjustment to be made. I think there might be a difference in the link mount point to the 173 carb throttle lever. An auto kick down linkage may also limit throttle travel if incorrectly adjusted.

Check that you dont have a vacuum leak.

The 173 engine is a hard working engine if it's in good condition. It should be fine as a replacement for the 179 or 149 originally fitted to the EH.

If you have an auto trans, you may have a problem with a slipping transmission or an incorrect or mismatched torque converter

Is it originally an auto or manual car? The EH was fitted standard with a 3.55:1 diff ratio in manual and with 3.36:1 ratio in auto cars. A 3.55:1 diff would be better replaced with a 3.36 or 3.08 center to keep the revs down a bit on the highway.

Fitting a 3.08 (or 2.78:1) center will mean removing two of the diff mounting studs and replacing them with longer bolts. Make sure you get these two bolts and note their relevent position when you get the center if you use this ratio. You will need to remove the old locking wire from inside the housing and replace it with a new piece when you finish. Also be sure you pick a center with course axle splines to suit your axles.

Keep an open mind as you systematicly check to find the problem. There are numerous other possibilities apart from the few I have suggested. If you checked these and still can't seem to fix the problem, post any more symptoms that may help to pinpoint the fault.

It's got the 173 carbie in it but i don't know all the connection and things. I plane to take this beauty for check up soon. After i look closely to the problem, it's seem that there're lots more of them. So may be is good idea for me to take it to the professional.
