Possible LC XU1?

Hi guys,

As much as I don’t want to be one of those guys who asks the question "Is my car an XU1" and the reply is "Check your plates!", I have hit a brick wall and need some help. I have been tasked with finding a car for my old man for some time now. Preferably an LJ Torana in either 4 or 2 door but I have come across something a little different and he is definitely interested.

It's an LC 2 door with XU1 flutes, rear spoiler, 'Bathurst' fuel tank, brake booster, GTR dash and a couple of other bits and pieces. It has been a race car at some stage of its life as its been fitted with triple Delortto's, big cam and a roll cage but the interior has now been restored to match the original black vinyl by the current owner.

I just assumed someone has fitted a lot of the XU1 bits and pieces to give them some credibility on the race track but the more research I conduct the more I think this could be an actual XU1. The one thing that's stopping me from finding out once and for all is the lack of plates, there isn't any left, they are all gone. The current owner and the previous owner have no idea what happened to them. They purchased the car without them.

What I have found however is the chassis number stamped into the inner left guard under the carb's and an engine prefix that begins with 3100X. What information can I gather from these 2 numbers and is it going to be of any benefit to me? From my research it seems that the engine appears to be from an early LC XU1 but what can the chassis number tell me? Anything at all? Is it even a 'chassis number'?

I have read something about coinciding engine prefix with stamps in the head but i am unsure how to go about this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys. Have a good day!

Join and ask here. They know their Torana's these blokes. My feeling is the tag's are gone for a reason, and that's maybe to deceive. Although these days unless you can verify the tags have not been removed from a car, even these can be swapped from car to car. My advice is if the car doesn't have XU1 tags, and the owner can't prove provenence, treat is as a Torana S and pay appropiate prices.

Yep, spot on Keith. Luckily the price does reflect to some extent just an LC S coupe but it is slightly inflated because of the engine block and a few other very sought after XU1 parts. The sale certainly doesn’t hinge on the fact it might be an XU1 but it could definitely seal the deal if I could prove that it was. One of the things I love about old Holdens is asking around the local community, getting a good lead on what such and such might have in his shed/paddock and coming across a car that you have never seen before right on your doorstep. If I only had enough money to then buy all these cars I would be set for life!

there are a couple physical differences to look for one is the battery box its further forward to allow for the triples look at an original one to see, the other difference is the brace for the brake booster where the hole is drilled to bolt to the engine bay this will be further forward or there maybe 2 if a larger booster has been fitted

The spare tyre mounting arrangement is different in the boot. "S" and "SL" models should have two brackets on the boot floor.

GTR and XU1 should only have one bracket. The exception to this is if an "S" or "SL" was optioned with rally wheels and 70 profile tyres from the factory.

I'll post a pic shortly.
