Does matching numbers or original colour really increase value?

I've recently purchased a tidy original well looked after Hq that is in a colour I realy don't like, (orchid metalic) I can't wait to paint it but everyone keeps telling me to keep it original as it will hold its value? The motor is not original so is there any point in keeping it an original colour when the engine is not matching anyway? I would have thought that any restored hq regardless of colour would be worth more than your average rust bucket. would I be stupid to paint it?

If it needs painting then change it, if it's original paint and in good condition you'd be crazy to paint it, it's only original once ! A nice set of wheels can make an average color look better

its YOUR car so do what YOU want.

having said that. original cars are only original ONCE. if you do decide to sell later, original paint even in poor condition is generally worth more than a resprayed car (unless its show quality with receipts etc)

you can also say original paint hides no sins, what you see is what you get. most buyers like that part of it.

lots of buyers have been stung by a quick bog'n'jam job - car looks pretty at first but after 6 months the rust bubbles start to appear...

i would also say the rarer a colour the more potential value, how many orchid metallic hq's were there compared to gold, brown, etc...

You need to ask yourself, are you building it for yourself or the people telling you you're stupid for changing the colour?
Do you like the colour? No, you don't. You have your answer. If it's painted well the change in value will be a non event. If it was a monaro or something more collectible it would make a difference, but who cares, paint it the colour you want.

All good points, this car has definately had repairs and has had a re spray so it's original colour but not original paint. I will keep it as is but it will need repairs at some point and I might just go for another standard 1974 colour. it's not a Monaro or even a premier so I'm not going to beat myself up over it. When its finished it will be still desirable regardless of colour.

Unless it's a rare car, I don't think it really matters Steve. It's only a paint job, and there's plenty of other HQs out there. Holdens don't have matching engines, they have a date that determines when the motor was made, it's not matched to a car. So you could find a motor that matches it if you really want to..
I reckon enjoy it how you want to. And paint it any colour you want, hopefully you'll keep it for a long time so value really isn't an issue?

mentioned Holden do not have a matching number set up as such. The only way to determine this is if you have the original papers from purchase for that car, and all the engine number etc match the paper work. If you do change the colour be also aware of the trim colour that may need to changed as well?

i do a bit of work on a sandman thats just had a big $$ restoration, the engine (253) is a commodore motor according to the engine number. the owner is anal about this and is now tracking down a correct dated engine just to have - i for one would not care as its not 100% original anyway (its got an edelbrock manifold, 465 holley, aftermarket dissy, chrome tappet covers etc etc) the engine in it runs well and 99.9% of people would not look or know what to look for at a show if the bonnet is up.

If ya going to effort of chasing the date code put the proper carby, air cleaner & manifold. But on the other hand they are all bolt on's. But in saying that I'm not a fan of pimping up special models. But what is far far worst IMO is gutting out Monaros, GTR's, SLR's GT's & the like & turning them in drag cars I'm not fan at all.

I do have the original purchase documents so the engine number and body number are recorded. The trim code / body code plate is missing so I was suspicious about the original colour however my painter has gone over it and agrees it was orchid from new. The colour is kind of growing on me but when it needs repairs I will definately be considering a colour change.

Thanks guys, good to see I'm not missing out on a small four tune by painting it.

The fact the plate is missing would depreciate the value to a potential buyer more than a change of colour would. Paint it the colour you like.

It's a very nice colour IMO. It's a bit different too. Go for it I reckon :-)

My HQ sedan was originally orchid and that's the colour I'm going back to.

Good luck with you deliberations.

That's my view as well. I'm pretty sure my trim is ash vynal (35E) or maybe (35G) the dash and coloumb is a light olive green. You got anything with that trim code? Be interested what colour combinations go with that? It appears to have been orchid metalic (15335) with a white roof from new.
