Stumped

OK, so got the 253 rebuilt, all good. 500 k's in and she just stopped on me on the freeway the day before Christmas. Got spark, got fuel. but when i try to start it blows it all out the top of the carb. Mechanic opens on Monday so i will take it back. but it is doing my head in as to what it could be.
Any suggestions?

Has the distribuitor moved and thrown the timing out, making it advanced too much, causing it to backfire through the carby?

Old is good.

I've had this on a 253 where the timing chain has stretched and jumped a few teeth. Wouldn't start, backfired out the carby, was a tow home job.
Get number 1 on top dead centre compression stroke and see if the distributor rotor still lines up with number one on the cap. If its jumped teeth on the chain then the rotor may be noticeably out of phase. Or pull the balancer and timing cover off and see if the chain is floppy.

When it happened to me I was accelerating away from the lights. There was a bang, lost power and smoke coming out the exhaust.
