LPG 350

Hey folks,

I currently have a HX with a 253 on straight gas, I'm looking at upgrading to 350 SBC and either T350 or T400 trans, I want to keep it on gas, I've done a little bit of research into LPG, the best system in regards to performance is liquid injection, instead of vapour, from what I understand, to run liquid injection, it needs to be run from a computer, I was trying to stay away from a computer side of it, but I want to look into performance LPG, but there's not much on it here in Australia, can anyone help? did I confuse everyone lol or just me?

i used to use lpg and recommend it but those days are long gone, its just not as viable today with the price of the stuff. my lpg vehicle rarely gets driven.

you use more of it (they reckon about 1/3 more than petrol) they do not make as much power, the tank takes up valuable boot space and to me the setups generally look ugly under the bonnet.

current prices for me is petrol $1.30/l and gas $0.72/l

I run LPG on several of my cars & the best one of the fleet is my old WH Statesman V6 fitted with an aftermarket injected (vapour) LPG system.

I found the best way to compare MPG or running costs is to just figure how much it costs to travel a given distance, say 100 or 1,000 km on both fuels.

On petrol I get around 14 L/100 km which @1.32 per litre costs $18.48 to travel 100 km (or $184.80 to do a 1,000 km).

On LPG I get around 18 L/100 km which @ 72c per litre costs $12.96 to travel 100 km (or $129.60 to travel 1,000 km). Still a good saving

The other advantage of LPG vapour injection is no backfiring & no loss of performance due to the usual intake restriction of a vapour mixer. Rather than a loss of performance I get more power on LPG (8kw increase on a dyno) once the ECU has learned its new fuel & ignition curves to match the increase in RON (octane) of the LPG .

Another advantage of it over a conventional mixer is you can have fuel shutoff on overrun same as petrol injection. Lift your foot and injection completely shuts off till engine revs drop below a certain point. Economy improvement around town especially with manual trans.

Which also allows things like traction control, stability control etc to stay active. All this had to be disabled with the old school gas setups to prevent under hood explosions.

Try gas research, dear but ok, I'd just keep it on petrol and inject it, get a 308 and put VN heads and stroke it and it'll go better than old school Chev

HOLDEN DOCTOR

I've got on on the 5L VP.
For that matter, have you considered using a 304 + TH700 from a VN/VP? Bags of midrange torque, way cheaper and easy to fit (trans tunnel mods?) and easy-peasy emission compliance, unlike the Chev. Engine computer is very basic, and trans has no computer at all, just a connection to a speed sensor on the extension housing and a wire that goes to the torque converter to tell it to lock up. Get yourself a complete unloved car for a few hundred and your good to go.
