Picnic radio

Recently acquired a "picnic" radio at a flea market.
It is complete with the under dash mounting that it slides into.
I have discovered that the battery that goes in the radio, is 6 volts.
However I'm wondering if the radio works off 12 volts once located in its carrier in the vehicle.
There is some kind of "transformer" at the rear of the carrier, but no voltage notice etc.
Can anyone provide me with more information or a wiring diagram?
The radio is an Astor Traveller, but the "transformer" type thingo on the back of the carrier has "Ferris" on it.
Label says PAT.APPL. 21710/62.
There is an earth lead, a power lead and another black lead coming out of the side of the box.
Any info appreciated.
