Is there a kit available to rebuild an oil pump in a red six or do they just get replaced on an engine rebuild?

acl used to do kits, however i have not seen them in years. acl are now all but dead so will not be a source any more unless old stock somewhere...

jp make new pumps in high volume and standard volume, they're about $180 - and may be able to supply new gears if you were to contact them.

personally, i just pick decent stock used pumps, not many of them have problems, you will find that all you need to do is strip and clean and maybe get a machined cover plate if the gears have worn into the original.

i have plenty of cover plates surface ground ready to go if anyone ever wanted to do one on an exchange basis.

edit i was too slow typing, lindsay beat me to it.

Thanks Lindsay and Ben.
That's what I had in mind if I could not get a kit of some sort, to just surface grind or reproduce a new side plate. I am sure that is all that is worn.
Thanks again and cheers for now,

Mick.

Why are you not a fan of high volume oil pumps Ben?
What are the pro and cons and is a larger capacity sump required to meet the needs of one?

Cheers, Mick.

basically, theyre unnecessary. you waste extra power and create more load on the gears to drive the extra oil. this extra oil gets pumped up to the tappet cover where it struggles to drain back so there is no gain IMO (and also the opinion of many other engine builders under age 60) by running high volume pumps on the majority of engines.

some people like them just for the extra idle pressure but you dont need much oil at idle anyway.

same can be said of old school oil viscosity's, times have changed and mainly for the better.
