149 Motor

Model:
Image:

Just scored a 149 Moror and matching box which I plan to do up and have ready in case the old 138 Red dies on me. I will be selling off the box, so if anyone is in need of an EH 3 speed box let me know.

I'll run a comp test on it to see what sort of condition it's in but I also want to fire it up on the bench to check oil pressure before I go ahead and tear it down. Is there any way to attach the starter motor without the gearbox attached so I can fire it up, or will I need the bell housing attached?

Comments

Though there's little evidence of it having ever been, does it have "149" cast into the block on the manifold side?

No, the is no engine capacity cast into the block. The number on the RH engine mount is H80651

!49 never had 149 cast on it the way to identify them is the block only has 3 welsh plugs on the left side like the old grey motors

Just unbolt the BOX from the bell housing and attach a starter to run it on the floor but don't run it too long without water or run the hose through it

That oil hose that taps into just behind the oil pressure sensor, where did that used to go? To a turbo or something? :-P

...I'd take it. Looks like it'd bolt straight into my HR.
I think postage/courier would be the killer..

I dunno, gearboxes aren't all that heavy. I could get a quote depot to depot with E-go for you if you want Tim.

But I might let it go. As I say, if you were closer I'd definitely think about it, but I don't really need it, but it'd be handy as a spare. Maybe someone closer can have a chance to get it..
Thanks anyway..

If it's got good comp and oil pressure it mightn't need a rebuild.

Were the boxes different in the 179?
Could be interested, how much do you want for it?

Disregard, just found and answer to my own Q. If the box is the original to the engine number given it's not a match to the 179's, Oh well the search continues. Thanks anyway and Happy New Year

Thanks T you beat me to it

Yeah it's a 4 bolt bellhousing. They're a bit rare so once I've done all the tests on the motor I guess I'll throw it up on eBay.

Well, so much for the compression test. The starter motor is rooted, could hardly turn the engine over. Anyone have a working one going cheap?

T I was just looking at the 'paedia and would make a comment on the gearboxes for the early eh.
The first eh 179s were not available in manual because the boxes could not handle the power. it was not until some time later a manual box was available.
the 149 manuals gave a lot of trouble early in the piece because they were basically just a EJ grey motor box.
the fix was what Holden called the 'taxi pack' and my 62 eh had to have one fitted, it was basically as I understand it a stronger layshaft and bearings.
mine was one of the first ehs sold in WA and was sold to Elders for the country reps to use.
I bought it off about the third owner.
I assume elders bought a bunch of them.

for starting my motors i had a bellhousing which i used to bolt on and as it was damaged i cut away most of it to save storage space. still have it laying around somewhere. only need a couple of mounting bolts to hold it in place.

Not a fan of putting too many extra cubes in a 50 year old car with king pins and drum brakes. If I could have found another red 138 or even a good grey that's what I would have done. But this 149 came up so I grabbed it.

Nah don't think so. She drives and stops just fine as she is. Apart from the 138 red and a couple of modern gauges she is still pretty much original and I kinda like that :-)
