Engine Troubles

Hi Guys,

I feel a bit silly. But I've decreased my engine bay and the engine will not start. It's been a good 3-4 hours and the best it's done was to start but as soon as I put in drive it stopped.
I've checked the distributor and it's fine.

Any tips for me????

Thanks

Blow the out plug wells, the distributor cap and all the leads dry with compressed air if you have access to it.

Alternatively, start it up and let it idle for a long time to evaporate all the water from the ignition.

The stalling is caused by the spark breaking over somewhere in the ignition.

I used to work a car wash and this was a very common problem and solution.

HEI cures it. See the old Valiant add where the firetrucks showering water into the engine bay still don't keep the engine from starting.

thanks guys for your help, but I don't have access to a air compressor. I may just have to let it sit until tomorrow. hope that time will help me out.

Hair dryer ? put it out in the sun maybe with the bonnet open.......

I usually spray Inox or WD40 on all the electric stuff first as a water repellant....

then start with the degreaser :)

Check also that nothing has come apart when you have been cleaning the engine bay.....

Spray some WD40 over the top and the inside of the dizzy cap and spray some over the plugs. It should start right up.

As per Dave. Take of dizzy cap and dry inside (and out) with a clean absorbent cloth.

Be aware that flammable water dispersant agents can be ignited by the stray sparks that are keeping the engine from running properly.

The flammable part of WD40 is the propellant. Once it's been sprayed onto a surface and left to soak it's not flammable. My work van in winter suffers from damp all the time and I use WD40 heaps, never had a fire problem

I've seen it happen. What happens if the can hasn't been shaken up properly (excessive propellant perhaps)?

We didn't use it on the car wash for that reason. Only used compressed air.

The first HEI I ever bought had the magnetic pickup blown because someone had sprayed something under the cap.

That allowed coil secondary voltage to track through the pickup and blow it up.

"Any tips?"

Well if the engine woun't start after you decreased the engine bay....then perhaps you need to make it bigger....or fit a smaller engine??

Oh-dear..."Dad jokes"........ ;)

The Inox as mentioned above is good stuff.

I've done the wash the motor down and have a non starter quite a few times so I wrap my distributor in a plastic bag before I do it now.

I usually have no trouble with that.

edit > unplug the leads and put them in the plastic bag as you put the bag over the dizzy.

not having much luck, left it over night. tried to start this morning with no luck. it sounded like the battery was flat.
put a new battery in it. now it's just not turning over. maybe it's the starter motor

The replacement battery may be flat.

The battery terminals may need cleaning and greasing ...

well it was one of the spark plug leads. she was going fine, driving stopping. Then she stopped will not start now.
I looks like there is dirty fuel, the glass fuel bowl is not filling enough or quick enough.

Round 2 for tomorrow is to clean out the fuel line.

any other tips or hints for me.
