This was at the Ballarat swap meet today.

Rules are .... Classic and Historic vehicles - manufactured after 31 December 1930, but more than 25 years before the date of the application for a club permit.

So is this a Classic or Historic car???? Thoughts???

Comments

It's a Classic and Historic vehicle to someone who likes that make......

What club is it in ?

All club rego cars should be made to have a club sticker on them from the club that gave them the rego......

4 of my uncles used to rock up to parties with a keg in a Bongo van, pre seat belt days they were literally rolling around in the back of the van by the time they rocked up, pity there was never much beer left!
P.S. OH&S warning they were made of different stuff in the seventies don't try this today (must have been the lead in the petrol ;-)).

Definite classic! Engine size doesn't matter.

Is that a specific type of number plate: just for Classic or Historic vehicle registration? I don't think you can get club rego, if you don't have classic club membership - and what club exists for one of these?

Obviously it meets the vehicle age requirement, but jeez...

What else made up 'til mid 1988 would be (arguably) a classic vehicle?
Sure, an early Audi Quattro, Ferrari 328GTB, an earlier Golf GTi, or the sporting versions of our C'dores and Falcons.
What about these: standard VN C'dore and XF Falc, Sigma & early Magna, Express utes and vans?

I wonder who adjudicates on what is classic/historic?

hell, when's the last time you saw one on the road??

that alone makes it worthy of classic rego IMO, whether we like the cars or not...

there are probably people that hate our old holdens, and to them they are/were just basic, common transportation. (of course we know better)

again, IMO, given enough time, age can make any vehicle on the road in well looked after condition worth a second look in the sea of 0-10 year old cars. they now stand out because they are no longer common. 15 years ago, sigma's, xd-xf falcons, camira's, vb-vk commodores were very much a common sight. no longer. not where i am, anyway.

i support the 30 year age limit for club rego regardless of make or model, beacuse somewhere out there is a fan for any make/model no matter how weird/ugly/unreliable/boring - and they do desrerve the same benefits we do.

Its up to the club committee.
Common sense tells me a classic car is a car that does not depreciate in value and keeps going up over the years. Another thing is a car on club plates cannot use the car for gain. Wonder what was in the back, at a swap meet ?

Modified is horrified

The theory of basing it on retaining or increasing in value is flawed. The more common Vintage cars are falling in value as the old blokes who once cared for them depart the earth or are now getting old and too scared to drive them in modern traffic, not many younger people are interested in owning them in standard form. That shouldn't make them illegible for club rego.
The rules already exist so there really is no argument. If the vehicle is 30+ and the owner is a member of a car club (my club will accept any vehicle that the owner desires) it can be placed on historic rego. The condition of that van would indicate its been well cared for, especially being a commercial vehicle, that would make the owner an enthusiast in my eyes. I don't see any need to determine what the enthusiast should like, own or drive, as long as they enjoy doing it.

Well, I have just got an 81 (32 years old) Mazda 626. Perfect interior, and 90% body.
Bugger all of them around anymore, and by the end of this week it will be on the Club Permit scheme too.
Our Holden Club allows other brands on the scheme on a 1 for 1 basis. Got 2 Holdens you can have 2 whatever brands, and so on.

I used to have to drive them at work in the 80's greatest POS ever built you can make them bounce up and down when empty by pumping the brakes while stationary, don't know how they ever passed ADR's.

But whatever floats your boat I suppose.

That's pretty similar to my work van, except mine's a 1998. Can't quite picture it as a classic vehicle, but there you go

Any vehicle over 30 should be eligible for classic/historic rego, even a 120Why? Datsun.
This L300 has survived over 30 years and would be a fairly rare vehicle now. It was a commercial vehicle, designed for carrying stuff, just like any Holden van, ute or one-tonner. We would welcome the Holden commercial vehicles with open arms, why not this one?
This is our commercial vehicle heritage and it's just as important as our passenger car heritage.
If it was Kombi of the same age we'd love it.
Every historic car club should have a member with something like this L300. It would be very handy for carrying club display stuff, BBQs and eskys around on club runs.LOL

Old is good.

I was actually going to add a Kombi to my initial list of 'accepted' classic cars.

There is one vehicle that actually spans the apparent divide between a Kombi and the L300....

http://philscarblog....

I'm absolutely certain that an awesome little Mazda Bongo (rear-engine) would be welcomed into any Jap/Mazda/classic car club!

David, it might have to be a fairly small club, if all the club meeting stuff is to be carted in one of these :-)

Yes, many a hotrod has an L300 front end. I'm not sure if it's the first generation like this one or the second generation, maybe both.

I recall hearing of the L300 diff being used in toranas, LC/LJ's I think. Width was supposed to be same/ similar. NFI about ratios and stud patterns.

Not really whining. More along the lines of opinions as what's classed as classic cars and historical cars.

really who cares what people's opinions are?

Fact is a car becomes historic on age.

Anyone who thinks this is not a classic becuase its a commercial then no Holden panel vans or utes are. If you say it should not be because it is a vamn rather than panel van, what about all those Bedfords.

$ cylinder, what about all the really old cars thaqt were 4 and 6 before they perfected the mono block V8.

Fact is it is old enough and therefore IS.

Mind you there are lots of people out there that do not think many Holdens that are considered classic by the majority here, should not be used in the same sentnece as classic.

Why not, if it meets the requirements it should be allowed.
I've got a 1981 Ford KA Laser with 130000 on the clock. All original in great nick. Is it a classic?
Probably not, but i haven't seen another on the road for a while.
I see [Naughty Pottyword]ty old Kingswoods and Falcons all the time.
It's all a matter of perspective. If i didn't drive it much i'd definitely get club rego.

i remember back in the late 90's when the jap imports first started to become popular here, i had heard of rally car rego. a panel beater mate had a mazda 323 in that was a turbo whizz bang thing for the time, the owner was telling us about this rego @ $200/year(??) which would have been around half price of full rego.

they used standard issue number plates but had to have a roll cage. this bloke went up the road to the local exhaust joint and had an exhaust pipe cage fitted, he then let his mrs drive the car, once done it would never have looked any different to full rego cars compared to the classic number plates on historic cars which at the time were square "qld vintage" 4 number rego plates.

will be a thing of the past as too many people are rooting the system and the rules on it, the car cannot be driven willy nilly to places for the fun of it only to the incorporated car club events, not do weddings etc. Lindsay.
