VT Commodore

VT Commodore: the ignition barrel does not spring back automatically, wondering if that is why the engine cuts out but keeps going while driving, and every now and then cuts out completely so you have to restart the car? We have already replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the problem but recently going through a hungry jacks drive through the engine cut out on me again but as usual it starts up straight away without a problem???

Fix the switch first.
Then clean and re-set the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC). Also check the cranck angle sensor....though normal when they stop, they don re-start untill the engine cools down a bit. Or you pour cold water on the sensor.

Yeah sounds like the igntion barrel is worn. It is a common issue. I replaced the one in my car (Series 1 VT) myself. It was pretty easy, you do need a really tiny Allan Key or Torx bit (I cant remember which) to undo a grub screw. Just make sure the steering lock doesnt engage or the barrel wont come out (this tripped me up). I got a new barrel and key for about 70 dollars at Bursons.

The switch has a broken spring inside and needs replacement. It is possible it could be causing your stalling problem, depending on how worn/damaged the switch is. There are no return springs in the barrel, so I doubt the barrel is your problem, but are very common to wear out or snap the shaft off inside the switch.
