How to identify matching numbers ?

Hello, I'm looking at buying a HJ GTS Coupe Monaro and would like to know how to identify if it is a matching numbers car. I have photos of the ID plates, engine number and chassis number, which I am hoping will tell me if it's a matching numbers car or not. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Chassis number (found near the steering box) will need to match the number on the ID plates. These are the only numbers that "match"
The engine number IS NOT the same as the chassis numer (Ford did this, not Mr Holden).
DOCUMENTATION will be needed to go further, as in dealer info, owners books, original rego (or interm lable). This will tell you if the the car still has the same engine number it left the fsctory with.
Outside of that....
When you say "matching numbers" what would you like to have/prove ???

I was hoping to find out if it the car has it's original engine, but the seller has mentioned having any DOCUMENTATION for the car, so I'm guessing there is no way of knowing. I will check that the chassis number matches the ID plates in the mean time.
Thanks for the information, if anyone else out there can expand on this let me know.

As Q-ball says, no such thing as a matching numbers Holden. If you like it, buy it and enjoy it.

I disagree, there is such a thing as a matching numbers Holden. I have a 1973 HQ Prem Wagon, the chassis number on the ADR plate matches the number stamped on the front subframe and the body number on the body tag matches the last digits of the VIN. TGhese numbers should match up on any late HQ through HZ. The engine number does not correlate to any tag on the vehicle and can only be ascertained as the original engine for that particular car if you have the original build sheets or the original dealer's paperwork. If there is any doubt about the engine, the casting date gives an indication to the possibility of it being the original engine but cannot confirm it without the paperwork.

You can also go as far as ensuring that all date manufacturing codes on all components, including glass, are the correct date for the production time of the vehicle
