186 rope seal crankshaft

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out, I've got a leaky rear main and my mechanic insists that the only way to fix it is to get a new crankshaft that he can fit a rope seal to. I'm not too mechanically minded so he's been doing the work on it for me. I currently have a crankshaft that takes a neoprine seal but we cannot get a seal for it (tried some old reconditioners and rare spares). Spare parts shops say they can get it but apparently its not the original type (we've tried it and it leaks). The neoprine seal they give us needs to be cut down to fit correctly.

I spent alot of money getting this car back on the road and registered, but this leaky rear main is giving me so much grief that I've had thoughts of selling it and buying a hatchback (I think thats called a nightmare). Anyway, so thats why I'm looking for a crankshaft that suits a rope seal, apparently they have some little grooves on the crankshaft where it meets the seal so that the oil is pushed away in one direction.

If anyone has a crankshaft they want to sell I'm very keen to buy (this is the third time its been beck in the shop to try and fix this leak). Somebody please help me.

Call anytime, 0458586214
Cheers, Matt.

How bad is it?

Lets face it, HEAPS is these rear mains, rope and neoprene, leak but its not usually really bad.

there are 2 types of neoprene seals
one is the same all way to hq
the other earlier type appears thinner and has "wings" out the side

neither should need any cut off... that sounds like the buick seal they sell to replace a rope seal in a rope block

i suggest you measure the crank you have at the seal register. should be possible to seal it up without too many problems and without needing a rope seal block for sure

i have neo seals in stock that the later 186's used (assuming earlier ones used the winged seal) maybe post the date of the block up...

gday ben,

may i pls ask if you think my block requires a rope seal?

the engine has recently been rebuilt and oil unfortunately drips from bell housing.

i've read holdenpedia previously and noticed it specifies that blocks with 3 casting marks
require a rope seal.

i asked my engine rebuilder what he used and he reckons he didn't use a rope seal
but didn't say he noticed a rope seal when he dissaseembled it. not much help really...

i can't add photos here so i'll post up a new content entry with photos i took today.

also, if it does require a rope seal, is it possible to replace the seal without taking
out the crank?

finally, when i took the photos of the block for you, i noticed my oil pressure switch
is wet. do these leak (after 34 years)? if so, i wonder if i can still get genuine?

ta.
