Ute Hardlids

Hey,

Yakin' with pump truck driver at work today who was looking at my ute and he talked about the hardlid and asked if I had seen the Mythbusters episode that exploded the common theory that streamlining a ute will be better for fuel consumption , apparently with the lid off ( open tray ) a vortex is created in the back and the airflow over the roof slips straight over the car reducing friction and improving fuel consumption dramatically , this does not occur with the lid ( or tonneau ) fitted , anyone else see the episode or have thoughts of their own ?. Won't be taking mine off, regardless of facts !!.

Cheers

Ken

I seen the myth-busters about the tailgate being up or down, but not one about hard lids or Tonneau covers. For the record, tailgate up is best.

Cheers,

Many years ago I had an EH ute.
I was going down the freeway one day with a foam six-pack esky in the tray just under the back window.
Something caught my eye in the rearview mirror. When I looked closely the lid of the esky was tumbling end over end in the vortex behind the back window. Strangest thing I've ever seen.
The club member following me reckoned it had been doing it for a mile or so when I noticed it and pulled over.

Old is good.

Because of my son's interest, I've watched about 14 000 episodes of M'Busters.
I've never heard of any myth about ute lids. They DID do one to do with tailgates though, as Joe has already mentioned.

Tell your pump truck driver, that he's dreamin'....

HK'ing.
