EFI 253

Hey guys watsup?
I was just wondering if anybody has done the project i am about to undertake.
I am planning on converting my blue 253 into fuel injection. Im going to use the top end off a VN 5.0L. ( heads, intake manifold etc) im not 100% sure if these heads will fit the 253! i have been told by a source that they will, and that they may not be another.
Does anybody have a VN 5.0L top end that they want to sell?
If anyone has any info on this conversion, or has done it them selves, id be greatfull for your help.

Hey holden fan,
The latter heads from the VN are NOT THE SAME configuration as the early heads.
The latter heads from VN 'EFI' engines are cast with out the 'INTAKES" grouped.
As are the EFI's. If your to use the latter Heads you will have to use an alternative manifold (VN EFI or after-market). you'll have to source after-market extractors/ Headers, And because the 'Ports' are in different location. This means that your push rods are moved inwards. The Camshaft is Also different to Counteract this change.
Hope this sheds some light on your project. Good luck with it?

Dan.

Not sure if the VN heads valves may be too large for your motor..?

perhaps throttlebody injection my be the go? not as desirable as PFI tho.

Cheers

Has anybody done this conversion before?

Does anybody have a VN - VS 5.0L Top end they want to sell?

I saw a reader's car years ago in street machine that had VN heads/injection on a 253, so I guess it can work. Best bet would be to grab a pair of head gaskets & compare them with your block.

the heads fit early 308 blocks,so they'll fit the 253,just have to check the valves don't touch the cylinder walls(no idea if they even come close!)you'll have to change your cam as was mentioned in an earlier reply, head gaskets are the same for all the holden 8's

Gday, The heads will bolt on but you will have to have valve reliefs flycut into the bloch as the valves will hit. The cam will have to be changed as will the exhaust(I take it you will be using the factory inlet).
Your big drama is going to be getting it all to run! The heads on the E.F,I. motors have huge runners/valves that will make your old 253 be a absolute pig(read dowey) at low revs-even with injection. You will need a lot of compression to make any use out of the air flow through these which could give you the [Naughty Pottyword]s with exotic fuels etc(thats if your after performance)
It has been done,no where as economical as a 5L.
Cheers

Guys i dont know what to belive. iv been told by people that it will all work fine, and others say different. The mechanic guy from Street Machine magazine sais that the heads will fit on fine!

As for it running like a pig, its only gonna be a 253 bottom end. everthing else will be vn 5.0L. Heads, inlet manifold, injectors, distributor, exhuast manifold, the computer isnt going to be standard, so it wont be trying to make the 253 run like the 5.0L Im not after huge performance, i just want the car co be more reliable and fuel ecanomical. Its running a quadrajet 4 barrel at the moment, and thats a pig

In the end it will be up to you on the decision you make! After all you'll be footing the bill! Not us, nor KB from Street machine!
you could ring a few engine builders and ask for advise?

The EFI engine was designed for one engine in mind. THE 5.0L.
Remember that in the 70s they made both engines, and had to make the two be as economical as possible on a production point of view. This meant that both engines had to be interchangeable. (Chevrolet did the exact same thing. do you think the 400ci is a stand along block?, NO, its molded from the 350, this is why they are of Siamese configuration- the bores are to big for the case!)
In the 90s the 4.2L was no more, leaving only one engine! So all designing/ research was based on this motor! What you are asking is realy......"CAN I FIT a 750 Holley on my 253 and have it running nice and clean"? Of course this carb is way to big! Why? The area around the venturi is of a larger area, this creates a vacuum drop in you manifold, giving a poor signal for the carb to meter fuel!

So in-a sens your asking to fit a manifold and heads from a LARGER motor to a smaller!
Hope this helps.

hey guys, i was goin to do the same conversion to my 253, untill finance plans went out the door, neway, the heads. manifold, injectors, fuel rail second hand will set you back about $700, a new standard cam $200 (onlu $39 more for a mild cam), new engine harness $220, dizzy from repco $304 ($204 if you can give them an old vn dizzy), ecu about $250 reco, custom made wiring loom $200, and also if you want roler rockers for $475, but im not sure as to what the exh manifolds would cost as the wreckers was goin to throw them in for free, but all up, without the rolloer rockers and machining costs (if your using second hand heads you would want to get them checked and machined), it could be done for about $2000, and mate if you need to know where to get all these parts from, i can give ya phone numbers if you want
