if its effecting ALL YOUR lights, I'd be looking at the earth wire from your fuse case/ box. or the positive from off your ignition switch.
Do you have or know some one that can lend you a circuit tester? Its likely very simple, as one time in my HJ i suddenly had no turn signals, took it to a Auto elect and found it was just that. A loose Ground wire. cost me $25 or so? I have found that Ground wires coming loose is a common thing (Starter motors, Coils, And once an alternator!).

when you pull out the knob to turn on the headlights you should find that you can turn it counter clockwise, this will turn on the instrument panel lights

Do your brake lights work ? If so, you probably have the instruments dimmed like the fella above said.

Do you have a test-light/multimeter? If you don't, buy one and/or the other (test lights are only a few dollars at any auto parts place).

You need 2 things for a 12 volt DC circuit to work: power and an earth (and globes are not fussy as to which way the power flows through them).

Check that you have power coming out of the fuse box (grey wire from memory). If you don't, do you have power going in to the fuse? Is there power (or continuity, ohms) across the fuse? I have seen many, many fuses that look OK but are blown. Try replacing the dash-light fuse with a known good one.

If there is no power going into the fuse, trace the wiring back to the light switch...is there a broken wire in this part of the loom?

Follow the path of the dashlight wire and check that you have power at each globe. If there is power at the start and no power at the first globe, you have a broken wire between those 2 points so replace the wire. If there is power at the first globe, but none at the second, replace wire between those 2 globes, etc.

If that is OK, how is your earth situation (both fusebox and lights)?

I'm sure that the above will enable you to find the problem.

One problem all the old holdens are facing is the clips where the fuses plug in are getting old, and I have found that they get a bit rusty and stop passing current. I used to have a problem with my HQ every now and then it would just lose all electric power and die. It turned out there is one fuse towards the rear laft of the pack that runs the engine power etc., and this was a bit daggy, so I had to clean it up every now and then to stay mobile. Maybe you have that problem. The dash lights on the Qs are pretty piss weak anyway I intended one day to try to get some more powerful ones.

Help please, I have been spending ages trying to understand what my warning lights mean on my HJ ute. In particular the red (0) warning light. Not sure if it is either brakes, generator or oil pressure. Online I can seem to only find workshop manuals on my car and not the operating manual. Thank you, Paul

HJ Dash Lights:

Oil - Low Oil Pressure. Must come on in ON position.

Alt - The Alternator has failed and is not producing any voltage. Must come on in ON position.

Temp - The Engine temperature is excessive. (Half illuminated between ON and START).

Brake - The handbrake is on. Must come on in ON position.

Brake - Either the front or the rear brake circuit has failed and been disabled. (half illuminated between ON and START).

All lights half glow when the key is between ON and START as a lamp test procedure. Do this periodically to make sure none of the bulbs has blown.

Any light will come on full when the engine is running and its circuit sees a failure. The event must be immediately investigated.

The half illumination is caused by power being fed to the lights through the ballast resistance ...
