HB theoreticals

Hi,all...
Just a curiousity about HB toranas....
I don`t own one atm,and know nothing about holden 4cyl...as I have always played with red sixes.
IF I had a HB,and wanted to put the bigger LC 1300 or 1800 4cyl. in....what would need to be changed?? Is,for example, the exhaust and battery on the same side as the 1200 engine?Does the 1300/1800 engine still fit the 1200 gearbox and bellhousing, are engine mounts the same?? Radiator??etc etc...
Oh,how legal would that all be in NSW,too?
cheers
Dusty

I had the TA with the 1300 engine, it is the same block as far as I can see, with the 1159 HB enigne.

I have seen some with the Gemini enigne also.

All the 4 cylinder Torana HB, LC, LJ and TA are all the same length etc, so could fit any of them, but gearboxes may differ.

Not sure which is the best of these 4 cylinder.

You could go more modern from a later vehicle, just need to find good rear wheel drive.

I have never owned a HB Torana or an LC/LJ 4 cylinder (I had a 6) but my Dad had an LJ 1200 and my sister had an LC 1600. The 1200 and 1300 are basically the same engine and the 1600 and 1760 are basically the same. The 1200/1300 is a straight 4 and the 1600/1760 is a slant 4, I think you would probably have to change gearbox (or at least bellhousing) engine mounts and radiator to fit the slant 4 in, I think exhaust and battery are on the same side from memory. I tried to rebuild the 1600 slant 4 nearly 20 years ago and I couldn't get rings. bearings or waterpump for it, I had to get them from a Vauxhall supplier in the UK so I imagine it would be harder to get them now.

It would probably be easier to stick a Starfire or Gemini engine in or just change it completely and put a later model Toyota or similar engine. I was planning to fit a Datsun 180B engine in my sister's LC but she ended up selling it. The 180B engine was no problems here in SA then but I am not sure how hard it would be now. You can get most things engineered and if you are not increasing the size too much there shouldn't be too many issues.

sawjew is spot on-parts for the 1600\1760 are very hard and expensive to get(we had one about 20 years ago also).the slant motors are a pain to work on the lower side but they do run a trimatic auto(you may be able to swap the bellhousing with a gemini one to fit a gemini motor).mounts, etc are all different to the 1200,s.
