it IS possible, but you would have to have some work done to the heads, i know that the reds (type of engine used untill the vc's i think) had 9 port heads and the blues and blacks (blue is vh and wb, black is vk) had 12, i also believe the water holes are in the wron spot and such, ill do a search and see if i can find the old posts about this.....

Yeah its possible, not too difficult.

Have to redrill the block so the water gallery holes match that of the blue/black head, then use a blue/black head gasket.

You will also obviously need the appropriate intake and exhaust manifolds too. Maybe find some blue/black extractors?
Also need electronic ignition if you are getting the EFI put on.

This is a little if not a lot of the topic but I reckon its safe to say the black motor gets along better than the red one.The obvious solution is just transplant a complete black motor into the red engine bay. Firstly just paint the black job red. Presto. Would there be any problem.Probably not.Just another motor transplant among thousands and keeping it simple.
Maybe??

I was thinking of just dropping a black motor in but i was under the impression that if i did that i would have to comply with VK emmisions, Im trying to dodge that but using a later model head and the 202 crank from the black. Would a Yella Terra head be a better option? Im workin to a budget as im planning a 350 when i get off my P's and put much biger brakes on the car. I just want a bit more poke and to not have to use that vavle-saver additive when i fill up.

The engine numbers will give it away. Get a black efi motor, rip out the cam, timing cover, crank, rods and pistons, and run them in the red block. No compliance problems. Go EFI if you want, the cam is near to a XU1 job, the head has the larger valves and better porting than the blue or red, you will have to get extractors to suit, the efi ones are stainless steel and the starter has to swap over as well as you can't get the older starters out.
Electronic ignition off a VH or VK injected will give more go as well.

Thanks for the imput. It is interesting what are the options.

Engine Numbers...Would they go as far as to referencing engine numbers when registering a change?.Are they that picky. In the case of the red and black, the motors are just so similar ie capacity appearance etc that i'm thinking a change of colour might just be enough to fit the bill. Its not as though ones a V8 and the others not etc.I'm guessing that as usual most people myself included don't know all that much when it comes to engine numbers. That may not be such a bad thing.

Yeh thats what i thought, I've got a black motor that was injected but had had a carby put on it so I should be able to scavenge most of the parts from that.

Thanks for the help,Joe

Yella Terra only make 12 port heads new now and they are about $1000 You can get hi or low compression for turbo applications.

You will have to drill the four water holes in the block to fit the head, but you do not have to take the motor out to do it if you are careful. You do not have to fill in the other holes.

Extractors are available from most of the large companies. You need to ask for WB blue motor extractors if you are fitting in an old Holden. I got Lukey/ Walker ones and they fitted perfectly. I got the ones with no heat riser or EGR port.

I know of a car currently undergoing engineering in Vic and the EGR (injected)or air pump(carby) do not have to be fitted to an EH. The 1964 model car must comply with 1964 pollution requirements.

Wrong wrong wrong
The compliance depends which is newer the car or the motor, if the motor is newer, say a VK into an EH car, then it has to comply with the VK regs, if the car is newer say a 179 into a VK (I know it won't happen) it still has to comply with the VK regs.
I am not sure what the EH you are talking about is having done so can't comment on that.
