NO BRAKES!!!! WEEEEE!!!!

ok despite the title i found out last night its no fun to have your brakes fail, basically whats happening is there is about 95% travel in the pedal now and pretty much now assitance, i heard/ felt a pop in the pedal and it just went floppy and the brake fail light came on, now mind you i still have some braking, but its really really bad compared to before, i also noticed after a quick look under the bonnet, the traces of a leak of brake fluid, ie stripped paint, and when i checked it this morning it had gone down more so, a guy at work recons that ive done the seal between the master cylinder and the booster, has anyone had anything like this happen before??? come on im sure someone has, id really appreciate any hints on where to start looking, wouldnt really consider my knowledge of brakes all that great but i have a felling it may get greater very soon....

thanks in advance

My brakes have failed twice. Once was a busted booster and the second was a pinhole in the brake line running under the car. I don't know what else you can do other than try and find the leak. With the booster there was no evidence at all, just no pedal.

Cost me about $300 to get reconditioned. I think the diaphram inside was stuffed.

There is actually 4 seals in the master cyclinder. 3 on the piston which run on the bottom of the unit - which is compressed via the brake pedal. These are the ones which usually go and lead to the common paint removal from the brake booster. There is also a seal under the master cyclinder lid which can leak and run down and remove paint from the same location, (has happened to me). I'd say your master cyclinder will need a kit put through it or purchase a new unit if its leaking. The booster has no fluid in it so dont get confused with that. The diaphram in these do go and you can still stop but not very well. Engine idle may also decrease as pedal is pushed due to a vacumn leak within the booster. Best off getting a reco booster if this is the case.

sounds like my master is stuffed then boys, ive come up with the brilliant idea of using the master cylinder off my pano, also a disc front with drum rear, to get her going for now, the auto tech teacher at the school i work at has done this before and said it will work but that i need to make sure i bleed the cylinder properly before i put it in, so hopefully ill get that right and it will be all ok for tonight, then i just have to clean and respray the engine bay...
ill let you all know how i go, and yes the van is off the road, and i need to get an v8 booster for the 8 im putting in so id just be throwing out the old 6 cyl booster,
long live the sandman

Same thing happened on my vh mate, it turned out that the little bloody valve thing (which is a [Naughty Pottyword]ing nightmare to get out) attaching the master cylender to the manifold via a little hose had broken. Wasnt too good considering it happened on the bloody freeway. Got home by duct taping the bloody thing down to the manifold. Most of the time though if this happens your manifold vacuum guage will sit on 0.

yeah i almost plowed into an intersection, good ol whoa bar (handbrake) helped pull me up in time, ill swap the masters tonight and see what happens, i reckon you might be right about that valve, i removed my vacum gauge to put in a tacho so i wouldnt know if the vacuum had dropped, ahhh well, i can't wait to knock off work to see what is wrong with the lil devil...

Yeah lets hope its just the valve, can get a new one for bugger all :)
only problem is getting the old one out, usually they are tired and cracked and youll end up with the top half of it in your hand, and the rest of it still screwed into your manifold.. try getting one of those little bastards out without dropping [Naughty Pottyword] down ur manifold, its next to impossible.

All i have to say is, i did exactly the same thing on my vh, and quite frankly that job of getting that [Naughty Pottyword]ING valve out can [Naughty Pottyword] itself! i had hardly any skin left on my fingers, and i broke one tryin to get it in. but it fixed the problem, (i could tell it was that valve cause it made a loud whistling noise,
