autobarn and teenagers mobile phones

Just to keep the on topic police happy autobarn are throwing out classic xld valvoline for $11.99 a bottle tomorrow.

On an off topic question, my 14 year old uses $20 bucks pre paid mobile very quickly with sms, he doesnt make many phone calls mainly text.
Its easy for him to use $40 a month, as the texts and phone calls are very high.
I would like to know what plans, or other does the old holdeners use with kids in their teens?? As the cooks thinking of throwing him on a $50 buck plan a month unlimited sms and $600 bucks of phone calls a month.
PS only 2 bottles per customer, bring your teens if you want four

I'm right for oil at the moment but phone plans with caps are the way to go.Pay your $50.00
a month or whatever and let the kids talk their heads off as the call and text allowance
is more than enough.Even my daughter can't use it up.

We're all on Vodafone, never had a problem with them. Free Vodafone to Vodafone calls. I usually get $20 charge, I've got a year to use it. But it usually lasts me a month or two as I don't use it much. Mrs is on $29 cap which gives $150-odd of free credit. The boy pays $10 for $100 credit for 10 days. And the girl's on one that gives free texts and something else.. I got a bit lost.

I'm interested in what others think...

vodafone is probably good if you stay near the cities but you will be bitterly disapointed if you travel or live inland. May be different in other states but vodafone in country NSW is a non event.

Yeah, you're right, same thing happens down here in Vic if you go too far into the country. I haven't had to worry too much about that though. I drive thru a blackspot to and from work, that's only because there's a bit of a hollow..

I might have to check out that link of Blissy's/HF's. Looks promising..

As for the phones, I'm on a pre paid thing with Telstra, I pay $40 a month and get $600 or so worth of free texts/calls and I think 800 mb of Internet usage (lots of oldholdening to be done with that)

As an insider working for the dreaded Dark Lord, I can safely say you would have a better time with an official Telstra setup. 3G is a netowrk we dont use unless there is nothing stronger (NextG, 4G, etc). Best case I can put forward is this; Vodafone = 3G
Do with this information as you will.

Yeah, I got two yesterday, chucked them in the boot, went straight back inside and got another two. They didn't seem to care. Then tonight I read this. Usually I miss out on these things or just plain forget.

We have our internet with Exetel who use Telstra for their ADSL2 and Optus for their ADSL services. They also offer mobile phone accounts to their internet customers. Our mobile phone plans are BYO handsets. The cost of each plan is $15 per month for $500 included value. Calls are 32c a minute and SMS are 25c each. ?it also includes 1GB data allowance. This service is through Optus. They do also offer $8 plans with $200 included call/sms value and 200mb data..

Vodafone now have crap coverage in regional areas because they can't use the Telstra network anymore, they have to use their own which is still being built.

3 was using Telstra's equipment and regional service was pretty good, however when vodafone took over 3 they directed all the 3 customers onto vodafone and Telstra kicked them off their network as a result.

I was on 3 and went from terrific to shyte overnight, eventually after pursuing the coverage issues I was released from both my vodafone contracts and went to Telstra on their $30 pre paid.

All good... except I thought I'd set use Telstra's automatic payment facility for my prepaids... the shyte has hit the fan again.
Seems that the monthly prepaid plan is actually 30 days not a month, so after every 31 day month they cut your phone off for a day until your nominated date clicks over. I asked them what effing genius bonus junkie came up with this stupid plan? 4 months have 31 days and Feb has 28 (29 every 4 years), so I said you pinch 2 days off me every Feb and then block me for 1 day each 31 day month. Which equates to them stooging me for up to 6 days a year. "Oh yes sir, we are working on that issue, please take our survey".

Grammar: The difference between "knowing your shyte" and "knowing you're shyte".

I remember when Vodafone first came to Australia. Telstra wouldn't share towers with them so they built their own. Their whole advertising program revolved around the fact they were building their own network and I think they may have even been claiming that it would be the biggest. So what happened? Seems as soon as it all switched to digital Vodafone just gave up.

DO NOT GO WITH VODAFONE!!!!
Im with them and im counting down the days till my contract is up. i still got 12 more months of pain though till i can leave and go elsewhere.
But yea anyway as far as value for money goes, plans are the best way to go. Something between 30-50 dollars a month would be sweet and should get your son heeps of calls, txts to his friends.

We just put the 14yo onto prepaid 1c texts, he was going through $20 in a week without a problem before. He mainly texts instead of calling.

He found the "plan" for the prepaid texts for 1 cent, I recharged the phone the $30 that telstra wanted to do the swap and the $30 was only down to $22 after 3 weeks so it made quite a difference.

Using my emu brain maths skills, by my reckoning, your young fella has sent 800 texts in 3 weeks....or an avg of 40 a day. Don't let the young fella tell you he's not smitten over some young crumpet :D

Woodruffs lemonade in Adelaide was the best lemonade money could buy. One year (mid to late 80's?), we collected enough cans and bottles, over a few weeks in the city of churches, for the entire family to go to Magic Mountain in Glenelg for a full day and ride all the rides, buy lunch etc etc.

We learnt the value of money through hard bloody work. Try getting one of today's kids motivated enough for that reward for all that torture! LOL

Pretty easy for us here in Rural NZ - no cell ph coverage here in the hills = no need for cell phones for our teens. ;-)
Funny how for most of us we lived most of our lives with these things and now it seems most cant live without it. I have a cell phone for storing my music, taking photos, navigation and using as a torch ( not a welding torch though!) In short I use my smart phone for everything bar the phone function except to ring home when I'm leaving work (is $6/month & unlimited). I only do this just to use the $6.00 charge which is my total expenditure each month for my phone. I rarely receive calls and have no need/time for texts. If I need to speak to someone I use the land line which is free local calls here in NZ.

I have to laugh when Telecom rings me and asks if I want a monthly plan;
Telecom Indian sales rep; "But sir you are missing out on Internet and low cost calls and texts"
Streetneat; "Umm -aside from no cell ph coverage at home.... has my land line with free local land line calls stopped working? I pay for Internet at home - cant I just keep using my home Internet?

Its pretty simple stuff- you can keep believing you HAVE to have a cell phone or you can do what everyone did before these things were force fed to us by marketing pirates.... Like in the old days - I just wait until folk are at home to ring 'em or just use the computer.

Life is a s free and complicated as you want to make it.

Cheers streetneat-Andrew.

today expect things to be handed to them. It's Saturday lunch time and both myself and wife are sitting at home whereas both my kids are at work. My daughter has put her hand up for every hour she can get at KMart over the school holidays. My son's on Uni break and is starting work at 6am each weekday, and Saturday this week, picking and packing books in a warehouse. They both know if they want anything in life mum and dad will help but won't hand it to them..

years ago when I was a lad living in Adelaide. I busted my butt riding a news bike every afternoon, rain hail or shine, on my paper round through the city, running up and down stairs with arms full of news papers, collected cans and bottles, even jumping fences to "top up" my quotas to save up to build my own custom push bike.(that was the thing for tweens in the early 70"s) Of course, I reached my goal, then we had to move to Sydney, and not long after, some rotten rexhunt knocked it off. I wasn't so much as upset, I wanted blood. To this day, I have never bothered with customising any of my cars or motor bikes. But the lesson was, whatever you work hard for, guard it with your life. yet somehow, those were the days.
