VL 5L to replace 253 in HJ Tonner

Hi Guys,

So I'm looking at potentially buying this 308 (304 or whatever) for my tonner which is currently running a 253/Trimatic with a 465 Holley. The guy says he had it in his VL and he wants it gone as he went with a bigger engine, it has a 650 Holley, electric water pump, 0.020" flat tops, std. cam/crank and has done just over 10k km's since rebuild. Oh and it was in front of a trimatic.

Now I know I'd have to swap the sump and oil pick up over and probably install AU fans because of the electric water pump but is there anything else I will need to worry about? Is this gonna be too much of a pain in the a**e? Should I just wait for a good red 308 to pop up? Also he's asking $2000 ono, what's a descent offer?

I know this question has probably been asked before, sorry.

Cheers, Stuart

WHAT? no gravy?

You will need to swap the steel engine mounting brackets as well. The rubber mounting is the same on both so pick the best looking pair and use them. Also swap the VL coolant temp and oil pressure sensors out for the HJ ones.

The oil pump is the same. The electric fuel pump most likely has already died and been replaced by the earlier mechanical pump.

For that money for that engine, I'd need proof or a proper guarantee it is what he says it is.

Keep looking. Much better out there for $2k.

Too dear. Offer him $800.

If you do end up with it, chuck the electric pump on eBay and buy a new mechanical pump for it. Some of those pumps can pull around 15-18 amps on start when hot. Some fans over 20amps each. Run the mechanical pump and fan for a street car.

If you want to run the electric crap, make sure you make a good harness and not just pull power straight from the coil, like sooooo many people do.

Shane.

Here is the listing:

Isn't a 650 Holley like $500+, from the photos it looks brand new, the brand new CVR water pump is $500 so there's $1000 just in accessories. Then how much is a running 308 with extractors etc.?

If I get it, I could sell the water pump, the alternator and gilmer drive (as I would just run my pulleys, alternator and power steering) and what's left of my 253 so I can recoup a bit of money.

I dunno maybe I should offer him $1600?

Do you think I'll have problems when I change the engine number over going from a 253 to a 308? they're not going to inspect it are they? And make me run all the emissions crap?
