Warren, no need for any "coolant"additive as such unless there is a problem with the cooling system. You need to look at the products available and see what, if any, corrosion inhibitor properties they offer. A representative from a major oil company once told me that an ordinary glycol coolant in a cast iron engine "INCREASES" corrosion by over 800% when compared to water alone. When I had a stock EH I used an ALFLOC product which was brilliant although expensive. I don't think is available any more. I am currently using KOOL IT and it seems to be working fine.

Glycol will prevent boiling, but doesn't mean you won't overheat yer new motor! It also reduces heat transfer.
I'm using Redlines Water Wetter, as I can't find Kool-It here, and I'm not allowed to import it.

They don't make em like they used too!

In my experience adding coolant can expose leaks, as the glycol stuff seems to be able to seep through cracks that ordinary water doesn't. I think the best bet is to make sure the whole cooling system is really clean, and the core of the radiator is totally clear and just use fresh clean water, unless you live in Cooma and need anti freeze :-)

Do you guys reckon it's worth using distilled water in the cooling system (I never have) or is that not really required?

I understand that is recommended to prevent possible electrolysis problems along with scale and other contaminant buildup. When you think about it the cost would only be about $10 to fill a system if you bought the water from a supermarket etc. I have never used it. I guess if you add a corrosion inhibitor than there is no need for the demineralised water anyway.

I would never ever use just water as mentioned above. Why risk the corrosion to save a few bucks..

Yeah I'd never use just plain water and no additive long term either. There is not as much to corrode in an old holden motor than in an aluminium motor though is there?
That link below says use Motorcraft (Ford) coolant, won't my Holden just blow up in shame then?

There you go, I made the same comments in that posting as I did in this one so at least I know I'm not loosing my mind. The Motorcraft R1 3B corrosion inhibitor was really good stuff. It's a shame Motorcraft no longer exists..

Isn't Motorcraft just FoMoCo with a fancy name for their dealership spare parts counters?

I always thought it was.

Motorcraft was/is the Ford equivalent of what AC Delco is to GM. It was a spare parts brand that was sold through the Ford dealer network. The brand included parts for all brands of cars not just Ford. Their spark plugs were made by Denso, their Thermostats were Waxstat, filters were FAF or FRAM, can't remember now. Basically it was just a retail brand for a dealer to sell to the local trade.

Up until I sold the wife's 304 black engined Commodore a few weeks ago I was using Ford R 13 C readily available from the local Ford Dealer.

'i'm definately shore that guage wont work with my tuff bango diff and Opal sydcrome box,if it goes though my grill, and I put the breaks on I realize its better with the glimer belt & tunned holly and Ederbrock duel feul webber gaurds, wiht etc primmer.'

I try not to use anything with glycol for my early cars as pointed out "the glycol stuff seems to be able to seep through cracks" Ive been using the Nulon R45 ultra cool. http://www.nulon.com... it will last 2 years if used with distilled water.
