Installing Air-con

Ive been considering installing air con into the gts. How big of a task is it to install factory air con into a factory non air con car and what components need changing? ive also been looking at trunk mounted air cons but i couldn't imagine anyone in the rear seat wanting air con pointed into the back of their neck.

It would be best to try and source complete set up from a vehicle. If not new vent controls, from memory they are all vacume operated.complete air cond box, behind dash, with evaporator and heater core to suit. Interior fan the same.
Under bonnet, outer of heater/aircond box, compressor, accumulator, temp sensor, condensor, air cond hoses, electric fan for air cond, 2 rib crank pulley and air cond bracket. You can still buy the a/c delco compressor, but later compresors are more efficient and less taxing on engine. You should probally use a stepper motor on carby to raise idle with air cond on. I dont think, ive missed any thing. Oh and remove dash to fit.
Hope this helps.

thanks mate. i was just looking into it more and those aircon boxes are an eyesore in the engine bay aren't they? Also i might have issues with aftermarket exhaust and the aircon box. There are a few other options i found like the "vintage air gen II" kit that goes all under the dash and can be plumbed to original vents. That looks like a reasonable option and will keep the engine bay looking neat and tidy as well. anyone used one of these ?

Yeah the air cond box is a bit unsightly, i have the factory a/c in my wb. 308. Forget to mention that you are limited on extractor options, tuned extractors a problem. Also clearance from rocker cover to a/c box with anything else other than std is very minimal, mine only about 5 mm. If not worried about original look, yeah look into vintage air, but have had no experience with these.
Good luck..

took 2 days to do my ute you will need some holes saws, fire wall should have dimples in it where it needs to be drilled also radiator support. Wiring loom will need to be up dated easier to get one already suited to air con easy to change as dash will be out allows you to do mods like fit 12V power wire for hei for example. Don't forget blanking plate for drivers side vent hard to find a non rusty one.Lastly you need to up date alternator to 55 amp hope all this dosen't put you off defintley recommend to do it.

thanks mate. alternator is already 85 amp. i changed it after i put the twin thermos in. It looks like its going to be a pain in the ass running factory air con as i have aftermarket rocker covers and extractors so the aircon box won't be fitting without modification. I think i'll be going the way of installing a vintage air unit under the dash of the passenger side if i do it at all. I've been umming and arring about this for a while now and every time i drive in a wedding and see the poor bride melting i start looking again. I guess the cost will be a contributing factor as well.
