intermittent problems- gotta be the worst kind...
my 202 used to purr on gas, would get comments about it seriously. usual tune-up would always get her runnin sweet if something went a bit out. then a couple of months ago i would get this thing happen where on startup she'd run rough as guts hard to describe in type but kinda "fvv fvv fvv" instead of "vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv".
shes dual fuel with a stuffed carby so only run on gas. i'd check everything off and on when id get home etc there was nothing amiss with timing points leads plugs. no difference in gas vapouriser settings. etc. as you do, i would rev her pretty hard in neutral to see if it might help [prob an old habit from petrol-run cars u know sucking some crap right thru a jet] and after a few seconds it would even out. i developed the theory that my petrol lockoff solenoid was faulty cos the running was a bit like when u switch to gas before the petrol's all used. anyway, the one horse town i live nearest to didnt have ANY solenoids to sell so i never replaced it and funnily enough the issue went away, somehow.
then of course, it came back. but slightly different. i tested the resistance across all the ht leads- all ok. plugs looked alright but i replaced em anyway. set points gap with dwell meter as they were by now a bit pitted/built up but ive seen worse. totally disconnected fuel line after solenoid plugged it so no leak at seat. ran car. eureka! yes definitely some fuel getting thru the closed solenoid. but hang on hermit whats this? shes still carrying on. fvv fvv fvv rattle shake aaarken ell ok so thats ONE issue identified but its not ALL of em. hmmm...
and just to add spice to proceedings, the solenoid stops letting fuel thru after a while. INTERMITTENT CRAP! took out plugs in carby bowl definitely no more fuel in there, ok we still have some other problem. meanwhile id replaced manifold gasket as two exh ports blown out. thought i might still have a leak but on spraying carby clean round inlet/head mating points no rev increase so hmmm... maybe its a lifter sound, not a gasket leak? dum de doo... off to town cos while dicking around i get a few shocks through one of the plug leads, and i need to get oil for gbox and diff coverplate gasket and may as well get new leads, points and condenser while im at it [but forgot the bloody ext hous gasket grrr]. NOTE: just because plug leads are within spec for resistance doesnt mean they are not arcing?
should mention that while this is going on at idle, shes actually running pretty well on the road. so, replace plug leads, points ,cond, double check plug gaps, check vac advance with mouth good movement. ok ... cant wait to hear this effing thing purr... ITS WORSE THAN IT WAS FFS! up revs- now she's no longer smoothing out at revs but the whole shebang is rocking and shaking and ffv ffv ffv ing at revs as well. and to top it all off , now shes developed the old backfire out the carby thing that suggests an air leak in the lpg setup. which it wasnt doing before the new ignition parts. walk away, skull a coopers red. 20 mins later attach the dwell meter start her up bloody awful but can keep it going with some choke to read the meter- perfect dwell... check timing with light- where shes always liked to be, about 10 btdc on gas. hmmm....
ok stuff this i say to myself, lets see if the problem is confined to lpg. take the lid off carby [which is stuffed mind you] pump some pettie in there see if the float levels ok. nup, shes fillin up to overflowin. bend lever a bit, test, float comes up ok, but it seems needle is very worn, cos the bowl is overflowin again. however i keep her runnin with the lid off just to see if its a different cycle. but no, its the same chitty chitty bang bang as on the gas.yes adjusted timing back to 6btdc for petrol. hmmm...
skull another red.
back into it cos now shes goin nowhere til i work this out. ok lets see, timing back to 10btdc. tighten the hell out of all the gasline clamps. tighten lid on carby real tight [it was a little easy to undo all the screws when i took it off] hell, pull out the mixture screw to get my 9/16 onto the carb to manifold nut on that side [the only thing that has always peed me off about holden 6 design i must say] hmmm both of these nuts took up a bit too...okaay crank. hmmm thats strange not firing at all now. even seemed like the donk was "fighting itself" to crank every now and then. oh. crap. id got a bit angsty and rushed puttin the leads back on for the 5th time. ive swapped 3 and 5 somehow! ok, they were in the right places most of the time so that cant be it but anyway sort em out. ok, crank...
PURRRRRRR or should i say vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv WTF! i have no idea what ive done but shes idling like she used to.
im still racking my brains as to why. just love that intermittent stuff.
did anyone read all of this? :]

Must be the crappy gas you're wetting at Orbost.
Watch out for all those Hippies at Goongerah!!
My ex wife came from Tubbut, we used to travel through there to visit the outlaws before they moved down to Bairnsdale.

hi dick, actually mate i live in goongerah and yeah ive been known to try to keep rivers flowing at the expense of sending woodchips to japan. its a complicated issue dick, theres a lot involved- biodiversity, fire, hydrology, carbon, jobs etc but did u know that most "hippies" in goongerah are all for a native forest sawlog industry? its clearfell woodchippers that killed the sawmills off dick, not the greenie maggots. we used to have a sustainable industry pre 1970 or so, when we had real craftsmen in the bush selecting trees, making snig tracks, leaving stuff-all waste. the advent of the D7 and japanese companies buying chips for a criminal price laid waste to a near-infinite amount of sawlog-producing forest in about 40 years. i understand the despair of people suffering through a declining industry, but lets not apportion blame for that on the wrong group of people. the government and greed stuffed the sawlog, the hippies have hardly saved a thing from clearfell woodchipping. anyway thats my humble opinion :]
orbost gas haha 88.7 cents it hurts mate it hurts! and when the city drops to 55 cents we get the huge special reduction to about 84 cpl.
strewth...

Yeah, I thought you may have been at Goongerah when I saw your location on the google maps. I was only having a stir!! I have seen many country towns and industries go into decline when "the powers that be" allow short term profits to outweigh long term profitability. Its not only in the timber industry but happens in all sectors, some of the effects of these policies aren't seen for years until it is too late.

take converter apart being careful with the diaphragm..(I make sure i've got a scraper at hand in case the diaphragm sticks to the gasket surfaces of the body and the lid?...then you can use the scraper to help peel(slowly!) off the rubber ..

carby clean the converter.

I spray WD40 or crc on diaphragm till its wet, then just wash it with your fingers. wipe it down with a rag. let converter dry naturally.

Dont know about carby-clean and the diaphragm so have always kept the two far apart..

then i use "Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket No 3" on the gasket surfaces to put it back together. Easy to peel off if you ever have to do this again.

Motorcycle Heaven...try and get down that way AT LEAST once a year....
