Easy way out when you don't have a dial gauge handy, find a suitable solid straight edge, move shaft all the way forward in box and have the gearbox all the way back while having the input shaft hard up against the solid measuring device( in this case a vice), then hold the box and move the shaft as far back as it will go, then measure the gap.
In this case there is 67 thou, the tollerance for the glide is between 30 and 55 thou, so I'll need to remove the front pump, measure the thrust washer, and buy one about 30 thou thicker....

Good job! Reminds me of a guy I used to work with in the trans place, where we sometimes checked end float roughly on Trimatics just by pulling it back and forward by hand to see if they were in the ball park.
He'd put a booger on the input shaft and then say, "Can you come here and check my end float?" Ha ha, miserable bugger's hiding down a mine somewhere now I suspect.
