My HQ GTS Fuel gauge stays on empty. Why???

Hi everyone,

I've recently fitted my GTS fuel gauge to my HQ but is constant sitting in 'EMPTY'. The gauge has been professionally tested before fitting, I read through the GM HQ series manual and it states that if guage reads E that the wire to the sender unit could be grounded so I ran a new wire and still have same problem. The manual also states that of the is an open circuit that guage will read FULL. so I disconnected the tan wire at the gauge but it still reads empty.
Am I checking this right is there another way to check?

Hope one of you can give me some tips

You may have a faulty sender or it could be the wrong sender. HQ's had 2 different senders and you need to match it to the right gauge.

Short the tan Wire to Ground with the Ignition ON for 30 seconds, then disconnect it from Ground.

The Gauge will read Full then Empty if it is working properly.

If it just shows Empty no matter what you do, then the Gauge is not getting Voltage. The Dash Voltage Regulator may have failed or the Gauge is not connected to the Ignition +12V.

Some Model OH's use a Voltage Regulator behind the Dash to keep the Gauges from drifting up and down as the Engine Speed increases and decreases.

Up to HZ, the Regulator was a Bi-Metal Strip. After that it was an Integrated Circuit.

Hi David,
The gauge should have the 10 to 73 ohms sender I thought I had correct sender if I had incorrect one would it just read empty? What about grounding the wire or having it in open should I get different readings?

Cheers

I think I've got it.
I removed tank and tested sender and got gauge to work with sender out of car. Due to everything being painted I've got no earth for sender. So once I clean off paint it should work. I hope!
Thanks

Sorry i have no helpfull advise for you but my problem is similar and hopefully i can use some of your responses to solve my probs as well. My fuel gauge says full constantly and factory oil pressure gauge also stays on full?? Car was off the road for a few years up untill recently for rust repairs rebuild and paint, so hopefully it a ground issue as some of your responses suggest.
