1979 HZ clutch alignment tool

Hi, firstly i must say what a great site for info and i have used this site several times with great results now needing some more information as follows...The ring gear on my Holden 1979 red engine 202 has chopped out so need replacing, i obtained a flywheel with excellent ring gear on it , i will be removing the engine from my ute so now my questions are ..should i remove the engine from the gearbox or withdraw both attached and second question is do i need a clutch alignment tool or use the broom handle /dowell rod method , is this way just as easy and succesfull as a commercial bought alignment tool..now just thought of another question regarding exhaust manifold of the same vehicle.. mine leaks at the end near the firewall due to slight warpage, can i have it planed at a machinist shop ....thanks for any replys...

I have a couple of different types, but the best one that I bought was a plastic one from ebay that was made from a mold of the input shaft so it had the correct profile.

The factory dowels out at either end where manifold bolts to head and put studs in if it hasnt been done already. thats half the reason they warp.in the first place

pull the front shaft out of an old box use that as a dumbie? old blokes used to flop the pressure plate and clutch plate on the input shaft put the box in then bolt the pressure plate to the fly wheel or eye it and have some1 push the clutch in while you put the box in.I remember when I was a kid pushing the clutch in while the oldman had the box out seeing how it worked I should have told him I done that never did or course.

Whats wrong with Melbourne drug addicts sleeping all over the footpath trying to scab money?

I used to fit the Clutch and Cover Plate to the Flywheel and leave the Bolts loose.
Then fit the Gearbox and tighten then the Cover Plate Bolts last.

Doesn't work with a Full Bellhousing though.

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

Firstly, no need to remove the engine from your ute just to change out the flywheel and exhaust manifold. Both jobs can be easily done with the engine in the car still...

WRT the clutch aligning...I just use my fingers to align the clutch evenly all the way around whilst nipping it up. It's not difficult to do it by feel but if you aren't confident then the advice above is the go.
