Celica gearbox oil level

Hi all,

Got a question for anyone that has experience with celica 5 speeds.

I want to check the oil in mine but it doesn't have a dipstick. Is there a way that I can check it without going through the procedure of filling it as using the hole in the side to tell me when it's full? Can I get an aftermarket dipstick or something?

Any ideas would be awesome.

Cheers
James

James you can drain the oil by razing the front of the car and removing the tail shaft. Once drained you can measure how much oil was in the box. Then you can buy some fresh oil and refill. From memory I think I used 1.5 liters to refill. You just run a tube into the bolt hole with a funnel. Cheers

You can have any colour you like, as long as its Fowlers Ivory,

To check the oil level in most manual gearboxes you use the fill bung on the side. Even some modern autos are checked that way.
As for a dipstick for a manual gearbox, although a good idea, there is nothing available that i know of and cant really see it being possible.

Just a bit of a tip when re filling the box, leave the oil out in the sun for a while before doing it, this makes the oil slightly thinner making it easier to pour in.

At work we have a pump on a 20 litre drum and just fill the box until the oil starts to come back out the hole on the side, let it settle for a little while and than add a bit more until it comes out again, job done.

Something like this makes it a lot easier to put oil in the gearbox and diff: http://www.ebay.com....
I've got a Toledo pump I bought from Supercheap or Autobarn (I think) for about the same price as this dodgy looking ebay one.

Good way to measure is to bend a zip tip to a 90 degree angle 1" at the end then use that in the bug saves jamming your finger In there also a Most auto shops they sell a push pump for about $10 which screws on perfectly to the 1l penrite bottles easy as pie

And refill down the top. Takes a little longer, but you don't have to jack the car up, shake the spiders out of the overalls, and try to squeeze the oil through the side plug, and you can listen to the wireless while yer at it!
My Supra takes 2.2 ltr, been 15 years since I had the last Celica.
