1st cruise not exactly to plan

Hi all,

Well my 1st cruise outing isnt exactly how I wanted it to turn out. Didn't finish it due to problems unfortunately. Had to pull over 10mins into it and couldn't go any further unfortunately.

To start the day in the morning I was wiping over the bay and found my engine mount bolt had vibrated loose and the nut was gone. So I had to go get a temporary bolt for today. Then when I filled up I was greeted to fuel spilling out from under the guard. It was leaking through a tiny crack where the filler neck meets the tank so we syfened some out and got this instant setting putty stuff and used that. Once I finally got going I got to home bush no problems, went for a walk, registered etc... Came back to oil under my car........just what I wanted. It was coming from that leak on the rocket cover from ages ago I was talking about. Just decided to get much worse today.
I checked the oil and it was fine so thought I'd play it by year. So we departed, it was behaving fine, got up onto the m4 and it started misbehaving. Didn't want to idle, was starting to get a bit warm because we were in bumper to bumper traffic. Kept going before the oil burning smell was getting worse and as we went off the exit, something gave away underneath the car. So I pulled over, looked under the car to find my dust cover for my clutch made by the d1ckheads at dellow conversions had melted. Ripped that off then popped the bonnet and there was more oil on the outside that I recon was on the inside of the motor. So decided it just wast my day and we headed home.

Really disappointed I didn't get to finish, was realy looking forward to today. But on the bright side Nothing major got broken, and it was my first proper outing so I guess things are bound to go wrong.

There is my little story for the day. Lol
If anyone can help me out with the rocker cover leak that would be great. Personally I'm thinking of just using a sh1tload of gasket sealer to stop it leaking anymore.
And if anyone knows what dust cover to use on a dellow bell housing for a celica 5 speed to 202 that would be great.

Cheers
James

Sounds like you have blow by from the rings not being bed in properly and are not sealing, causing a huge build up of pressure in the sump causing the oil to be forced out the rocker cover or any other available spot.
Also if you using a cheap after market chrome rocker cover , they twist and deform easily..

As for the cover melting , it should not melt unless the exhaust is touching it , use a steel one from an aussie 4 speed and just modify it on the bottom edge to fit..

make sure the pcv valve is working..

BUT my bet is blow by because the rings have not bedded in.. short trips and constant idling with a new reco motor is not good for bedding in the rings and causes a glazed bore.

When I run it with the rocker cover off there isn't an unusual Amount of oil in there so I'm not sure on the blow by theory. It's something to think about but. As for the cheap rocker cover part, your spot on there.

And as For the dust cover, it has over 50 mm clearance from the exhaust as this is what dellow told me to have minimum.

I don't think your the first to suffer the burning dust cover issue, James. I seem to remember there was discussion regarding this either on this forum or another a few months ago. I do remember Dellow's cover was the cover they were talking of. As for your other issues, it's just something that occurs with cars being part or fully rebuilt. You will sort the problems, just don't let it beat you.

Try Castlemaine Rod Shop. I think they do changeover steel ones using the original Holden cover. Tell the you have a Dellow bellhousing just in case theirs is different.

Old is good.

ALSO MAKE SURE YOU USE CORRECT SIZE SPRING WASHERS on you engine mount bolt's and nuts.

I don't know how hot it was there today ,but the motor shouldent be getting to hot , if the radiator is not blocked and thermostat is not sticking closed i would check your timing to retarded and fuel mixture as could be running lean..

When I say getting hot it wasn't getting to hot, just a bit warmer than what it normally sits on. Normally sits on 70-80 and it creeped up to 90 so not realy getting hot.

Thanks for the tips on the other things.

The cover prob caught fire from all the oil in it ? Hardly Dellows fault, they don't make there covers out of steel because that area dosnt normaly get that hot, think about it ?

The aftermarket rocker covers are a bit of a hassle, none seem to be baffled properly and the pcv system ends up compromised when fitting one. Don't be disheartened by the probs on the first run, I just about always breakdown on the shakedown runs on the bikes. If you've got blow by it would be smoking a bit, compression would be low and the oil can reek of petrol. I don't know about the dellow covers, the one I've got to go on my 3 speed was on my grandfathers HZ for a few years and it didn't melt, I'm not even sure if it is a dellow one though as it's got nothing written on it and it's at least twenty years old.

YOU can not see if there is excessive build up of pressure in the rocker when its off, but when its on and done up and you take the oil cap off and you can see fumes coming out or you put the palm of your hand over the oil filler hole and pull it away after 30 sec and its all oily
then that can be a sign of excessive blow by..

You do have a pcv valve in the back on top of the rocker cover going to a hose into the inlet manifold don't you ??

Yea I have a PCV valve in the back going to the manifold.

As said above by someone else, wouldn't it be blowing smoke if this was happening, which it's not doing.

As for the dellow covers everyone, I'm not the first person to have one melt, so whether it was from oil, or just sh1t quality I won't be getting another one that's for sure.

NO it wont be blowing smoke out the back if you have blow by its not oil getting past the rings into the combustion chamber its the burnt gases getting past the compression rings into the sump, the top 2 rings the oil rings the bottom ring dose not stop gasses going into the sump they stop oil from from entering the combustion area , your not burning the oil so no smoke out the back, oil rings only fail when they get broken or the bore has worn.

YOU NEED TO RUN IT IN PROPERLY , and put it under some load to get the rings to bed in.

what oil brand and viscosity are you using ???

To run engine in you use a bog stock /basic oil , with NO FRICTION MODIFIERS in it.

try and avoid stop start driving and idling for long periods

Yeah when you're running it in, yes avoid stop start traffic. If you work Mon-Fri you might have to do a long run (sober) in the middle of Saturday night to avoid traffic.

The rings need to bed in or you'll always be unimpressed with the engine. Which would be a shame given how much effort has gone into the car.

had instructions to run in at 2000rpm for one hour! I rang the grinder to make sure it was right. It was, so I did. I set the carbs before I pulled the old motor out, probly did the rings well too. Mind you, I don't oil the rings when installing. They need to bed in, why lubricate them? (wait for it....)

They don't make em like they used too!

I fiddled with the current gasket that is on it today and flattened out the rocker
Cover where it had bent a little bit and it's a lot better now. Still leaking a little but nowhere near as much.

I recon a new gasket with some gasket goo will do the trick :)

Need to find a dust cover for the gearbox now aswell

My bellhousing is a modified Holden unit. I ground bits away from the cover to fit around the bolts... all looks almost factory.
