Wheel vibration

Some advice please. Eh was running fine other than needing new tyres, which we booked it in for yesterday. Drove home fine on local roads, nothing over 70km/hr. Taking it out on the freeway this morning, the car is undrivable over 90km/hr the vibration through the steering is so bad.

Welcome experience from others is this an horrific job of balancing (was done with the tyre change), or do you thing some other componenet has been upset in the jacking up of the front end, ball joint? Other.

Just to add to my joy, when the vibration started I immediately stopped to check that all wheel nuts were tight, thats an understatement, first stud I put the wheel brace on immediately snapped.

Three of the four wheels have wheel weights, the passenger front is devoid of balancing weights. Looks like it was missed in the process.

So, you walk in and get up some dumb ass for using a rattle gun to do up wheels....

I know a shop who is run by an car guy, He teaches all his staff to lightly rattle the nuts up but they are all brought up to tension with a torque gun.

Take it back to the b*stards and get them to undo all the wheel nuts and tension them properly by hand then balance the fourth wheel. Then tell them to replace the broken stud and replace any others that break.
If they refuse mention fair trading and the MTA.
I hate this kind of idiot. Nathan got the Bluebird serviced at a "reputable" place in Coffs a while ago. It rattled like buggery when he got it back, then he noticed that the service label had 15w40 on it. He got some 20/50 and changed it himself and the rattles dissapeared. They had clearly put 15W40 in it instead of 20W50. Idiots.

Old is good.

I just done a quick Google on this and one mob is advertising 425 ft pounds out of a 1/2inch rattle gun,no wonder people are having issues. These clowns are trying to imitate the V8 super car pit crews,i personally take my wheels off 2 at a time and take them in to get whatever needs to be done and fit myself .At the same time i rip the brake drums off check the workings [brake pads for wear, wheel bearings for play, wheel cylinders for leaks and i use a good truck wash to clean it all down]Do not take for granted you are getting some sort of personal service, the guy you most likely talk to is just a desk jockey and a salesman the guys out the back are simply pushing cars through at the fastest rate.

the rims should only be tightened (by hand) in a cross pattern across the rim not around the rim, Lindsay.

WHAT? no gravy?

Yes... head straight back and demand a full set of new studs be put in. agreed with the post above, too many shops still use rattle guns to put wheels on.... first nut goes on at 100 foot pounds pulling the rim out at the oppisite stud, by the time the other studs are smashed up and tightened "checked" by hand the first stud has been streached. Very common problem.

This topic is important, the original owner of my monarao would not allow his car to be put on a 2 post hoist under any circumstance, this may raise a few hackles but he said he just could not trust whoever to put the supports in the rite place. This is no different for trolley jacks or bottle jacks you can do damage to shocky mounts ,sway bars or worse still chassis damage. So saying this mate check for damage on the undercarriage.

I recon they should ban impact wrenches from tyre shops, unless they can only opperate them in reverse. And I can empathise with the previous owner mentioned above, I dont trust anyone with the cars I love..... you wouldnt let ya mate, let allone a complete stranger service your missus !
