Working vs replacing a Starfire

Hey all, first post here...I have a Toyota Corona with the Starfire in it, and despite people ragging on it constantly, I have quite a soft spot for it so far. Done 240,xxxkms, hasn't missed a beat, gets me where I need to be every time (albeit very slowly).
I'm replacing the 4 speed with a 5 speed in the coming weeks (just with the Borg Warner 505 most likely unless someone has a better suggestion), and I'd also like to put a bit more kick into the engine while I'm at it.

How much noticeable power would be gained from a good performance exhaust and a new carby (Weber 32/36)? Is there anything else relatively cheap/easy I could do/get done to get a bit more power/better response?
I don't expect or want my car to be a racecar or anything like that, I'd just like her to be a bit better on takeoff.

Thanks.

I had a starfire engine fitted to a TG Gemini in the late 80's with an aussie 4 speed M20. (We built a fleet of them at Holden to release but they stayed with the Isuzu motor!) I ran two side draft 45mm webers and it was the ducks guts. The old HDT Rally team used to rally one with a turbo Starfire and it used to get approx 300hp from the engine.

How would I go about converting an engine from single to dual carb like that? Sounds pretty sweet, is it easily done?
My only qualm with that is wouldn't dual carbs chew through fuel significantly faster than a single carb?

If you use two SU carbs... from a mini or similar, it will more than likely be better on fuel than with the original. No throttle pumps! I'm using three of them, and even with a cam it's better than the factory engine setup.
There was a Commodore in an old Street Machine mag with a hot Starfire. Reckoned it went real well. Car was red. (maybe thats why it was fast????)

Haha yeah I know, not a very popular decision...I'm not hell bent on keeping it, it's just that I don't have anywhere to do an engine swap and don't particularly have the mechanical know-how to do it either (would give it a go though).

If I was the replace the engine, my options are a Toyota 18R, Toyota 22R, Holden 179, 186 or 202.
I've already looked into the Toyota options extensively, what info can you guys give me on the holden 6s? The Starfire is just a 179 with two cylinders lopped off if I'm not mistaken, would putting a full 179 + new carb and some other minor mods make much of a difference to the power, and what would I need to do suspension wise to make this safe?

Stick with the Starfire. 173 less two, 202 mains, 12 port style head. To go to a bigger 6 cyl, you'll have to start with donor engine, box, driveshaft, diff, mounts, front crossmember, gearbox xmember, should I go on? Contrary to popular belief the four isn't as bad as most think, probly cause they never had one. I have (VH wagon 5 speed), and I thought it wasn't too bad once I got it tuned. Also had 2 UCs with the 'other' four... not recommended. Also, bigger engines drink more, and speeding tickets are easier to get.

I just want to add that I don't drive hard or fast for that matter, and these mods would all be more for driveability than anything. I love this car and just want to enjoy driving it a little bit more.

Yep, making the very best of your Starfire mill will save you time, hassle and money.
Extractors will help just about as much as going with a better carby. Fitting them WITH a better carb will, in turn, help you get more of the benefits from the carb itself :-)

The Corona has the sloppiest steering and suspension of all those 70's/80's mid-size Sedans. If you really are keen on keeping it, I'd at least chuck a set of decent dampers under it.
An odd coincidence is that the same model dampers that fit HK-T-G Holdens, also fit your Corona!

'i'm definately shore that guage wont work with my tuff bango diff and Opal sydcrome box,if it goes though my grill, and I put the breaks on I realize its better with the glimer belt & tunned holly and Ederbrock duel feul webber gaurds, wiht etc primmer.'

Alright well I've managed to suss out a really well looked after Toyota 18R engine (which has also had a bit of work done on it) for it, which I'm going to put in as well as a 5 speed Celica gearbox (W55 I believe) which should tide me over for now.

Cheers for the input Craig, I've heard good things about the 18R so far...won't make it a total speed demon but should make driving to and from the hills a bit easier :P
