179 cam help
hi all have a cam prob , a guy gave me a cam for my standard 179hp ,it has twin strommies and extractors and electronic igt. have fitted the cam . there were no numbers on the cam but i found out that the cam was in a speedway car thats all i know.
( big breath )
now no matter what i do i cannot stop the carbs from flooding , engine was fine before , have changed jets put new kits in them , and when engine was running today i had the tops off the carbs , float levels were set fine , but bowls were nearly overflowing (and yes i had the holes taped up ) and fuel is pouring from bottoms of carbs. now with big cams is the lobe that drives the fuel pump bigger causing more fuel delivery to carbs , it seems like to much fuel pressure, have standard glass bowl pump, i used one of these fuel restictors speco tyoe u dial settings , still no good , should i just remove cam and throw it and replace with standard cam ( bugger i gave away the standard one doh )
any cheap red motor cams out there that would suit a stock 179
cheers

cam
Its not the cam causing the flooding the fuel pump lobe is still standard so the pump works the same
your needle & seats are probably worn or have dirt under them not allowing them to shut off
The problem is carby related
thanks for ur reply , new
thanks for ur reply , new needle and seats replaced , yeh im stuck , originslly i went thru the carbs new kits smaller jets trying to solve the prob , have substituted carb bodyies tops bases all of correct type, still have the same prob , the only other newly fitted is vb electronic dissy coil and leads , fitted with 12 volt relay
runs ok , hard to start runs ok for 5 mins then fuel pisses out the bottom of bowl both carbs mega rich exhaust , yep im open to suggestions of any kind , hammers oxy torch hehe
SU Flooding
Flooding is likely to be excessive Fuel Pressure.

i have never struck any differences with the fuel pump lobes. i would not think fuel pressure would change simply by fitting another camshaft and no other changes. however i think you should grab a pressure gauge and check it.
7psi is about the limit for the strombergs. once saw a brand new fuel miser pump putting out 9psi with symptoms as yours is showing now... a change to a new goss brand pump had it back at 5psi and good as it should have been.
whats your location?? if you are anywhere near the gold coast i have many stock second hand cams and you are more than welcome to one.
otherwise i have a few second hand cams a little bigger than stock, or a brand new billet megatork (crow cams budget brand) 2500-5500rpm for $190
hi ben thanks for ur info , i
hi ben thanks for ur info , i tried a new later model fuel pump , still the same prob so am now useing original class bowl type , have been checkin around forums and some say maybe weights in dissy cause probs , i love the old twin strmbergs but holly is lookin good at the mo , have played with these strommi carbs over the years but never come across this prob before, but i will keep u in mind re the cams u have for sale i may need one
cheers
not the cam stan!!
Its a fuel issue. You stuffed something up for sure, take them to a carb shop and they should sort it out. Sounds like crook needle and seats to me. Could have some fibre or hair holding them open. Cheers
Leaking Carbs
While I agree with the other comments that there is something wrong with the carbs, the reason the cam has shown this issue could be that the cam might not have enough vacuum to empty the bowls as quick as the original cam. You mention that the new cam was in a speedway car, maybe this had injection that would have overcome the vacuum issue.
As for a standard cam, I have a complete 179HP block with cam in the shed you can have. I was told the cam was a mild one, but do not have any other idea. I am on the central coast NSW if interested.

cheers chucati , yeh bloody cams may take u up on your offer will be in touch

mate
you have a float
you have a float height/needle and seat problem,,its not your dissy!!!and the cam or vacuum has nothing to do with the flooding full stop, the needle should be shutting it off once the carb is full,go over the carbs again.
WHAT? me worry?
