Putting a 350 in a Hz sedan

Hey im looking at putting a 350 chev in my hz it will be a crate motor just asking around to see if I could get some info on how to go about it cheers

everything from the radiator to the diff, including suspension has to be either replaced ,modified or both plus chevs are not legal in a hz (in nsw)what is required is well covered on this site good luck

NON GTS

350 chev not legal in nsw? i thought if u run a carbon canister it is legal? they just go by weight to work out max engine capacity.. considering they weight the same as hq (thereabout) i cant see why its illegal.

Have you done any research your self? - there is plenty of info around. I don't have that much mechanical knowledge myself but if I was thinking of doing a task like that and my first thought was to ask a vague question on the internet like 'where do i start' with out doing any research first, then i would be perhaps be paying someone else to do it, or realise that it will not be possible and leave it at that.

HZ Kingswood sedan, HQ Kingswood Wagon, HJ Ute, HZ Sedan, HX ute and WB Stato, what to work on or cruise in today?

Yeh I have done a bit of research it's just the little things that you don't see on the net I asked because Theres always some one whos got a neat trick at doing it
i haven't fully look through this site just yet as some of you had said so I'll get on to that
An the engineer I spoke to said that it can be done it just has to comply with pollution controll an the brakes may have to be upgraded An the weight of the car

VSI 06 - Guidelines for Light Vehicle Modifications

This document can be found on the NSW RTA website by Google searching but recently it disappeared from the easilly found list of Vehicle Standards Information sheets on the RTA website. Download it and keep a copy. I have a hardcopy in my glovebox and one time when a Highway Patrolman queried my engine displacement I showed him that and he said 'Fair enough'.

One thing that is most relevant is this passage:

""Examples of minor (owner certified) modifications are:
Engine changes where the capacity increase is less than 15% above the maximum size engine available for the vehicle (providing no major structural modifications are necessary and where noise and/or exhaust emission ADRs apply, all standard equipment such as carburettors, exhaust systems, exhaust gas recirculating valves, oxygen sensors and catalytic convertors relating to noise and emission control are retained and operate
correctly).""

So that handy figure, "less than 15% above the maximum size engine available for the vehicle" for a HZ where largest engine available was the 308 cubic inches:

308 + (15%x308) = 354.2 cubic inches.

Voila, the addition of a SBC 350 is itself a minor modification requiring no more certification than a blue slip with engine number to inform the RTA of the engine change. The SBC is below the threshold where engineering certification is required, according to this Vehicle Standards information sheet.

However since this document disappeared from the VSI list, I've had mechanics claim that any equation I use is invalid. As usual with government, everything is illegal until specified as legal. Use what official information you can find, trust nothing to hearsay or opinion.

So yeah technically you need to fit pollution equipment to the new carby (which I dispute but that's another story), and if the car started life as a 202 you'll need to change the gearbox/bellhousing/radiator/alternator/pumps/pipes/dizzy/tailshaft/diff. Plus brakes if you'll be driving like a maniac (please don't!).

But it's worth it if you have the cash.

I got my crate engine from Eagle Auto Spares. They have their own website, shops and sell over Ebay too. Others sell SBC crate engines too so shop around.

At siegetower thanks heaps for all that info mate it was very helpful in me sorting out all my costs befor I go ahead with the project my Hz is a 253 at the moment did you find it was a massive diffrence with the the 350 ?

for a 350 chev into hz you should be running a EGR valve manifold which only came on the late model corvettes and trans ams, kinda hard to come by, thats not to say anyone runs one 2nd poster that said you cannt do it in a hz is wrong,i put a hj chassis in mine to counteract the emission rules but its still regod as a hz, was all done by an engineer
