RB 30 into 1967 HR - Questions!

Hi all, i'm chasing some info on dropping a NA RB30 and auto box into my HR. Currently the HR has a 186 and power glide combo (also a disk brake front end). I'd like to stress that this is not a hunt for cheap horse power, i simply want to make my daily efficient and hassle free. While it looks like i can get mounting hardware from rodshop.com.au i still have the following questions;

- Is the HR gear box tunnel big enough for the VL auto? If not is there something smaller?
- Will cutting a hole for the shifter compromise the integrity of the vehicle?
- Will the RB30 get in the way of anything under the HR hod? (Steering etc..)
- Is there a simple solution for gear box mounts? Or someone who makes a customised set up?
- Where's the best place to get a modified sump and pick up?

Thanks in advance guys, id really appreciate info from anyone who's done this or something similar.

Cheers,

If you aren't after power and speed I really don't think you could get much more efficient and hassle free than a good stock 186 and Powerglide.
Maybe a blue motor electronic distribuitor, coil and the proper plugs would improve cold starts.
Other than that, if the motor and auto are in top condition it should be trouble free and as reliable as you'll get. If they aren't A1, getting the motor and box professionally reconditioned would be cheaper and easier than the RB30 conversion.

Please use, Holdenpaedia will get the first box on the left side. Post any suggestions.

Old is good.

Seems like a waste of time to me, usual options are "old school" 253 or 308, or "new school" V6, (as in VN+), RB30 were amazing for what they were in but not special enough for bothering with a conversion into a HR I would think..

Looking at 67_specials questions:
1. Not sure if the tunnels big enough, has it been done before? Talk with Castlemaine Rod shop they sell kits and without spending $$$$$$$ theres no other auto gearbox.
2. Depends were you have to cut the hole for the shifter, put the shifter in a place were it won't, modify the rod or cable to suit.
3. Gearbox mounts or solution would be part of the kit.
4. You can buy the sump, you can modify the sump yourself or get a sump of a Nissan three litre Patrol 4x4 same engine with the pan at the rear just like you need.

Look around at simillar old Holdens with the RB30 in them, talk to the owners etc, or buy a cheap VL drive it for a while and maybe use the motor and transout of that, plus all the other bits your going to need! You may like the VL so much, that may become your daily driver, while you do up the HR, 192, triples, etc etc he he Cheers Drew

My extended research leads me to believe that you gentlemen are correct, i have recently installed electronic ignition which has greatly improved the cold start. Maybe ill just spend the money on panel and paint instead.
Cheers.
