Centreline follow - up

This website has become a haven for keyboard heroes and bullies.

I sought some advice re: centreline repairs and I copped nothing but abuse.

Simply, I didn't want to pay 700 to get some mags repaired and asked for some guidance.

Instead, I copped some bitter vitriol and a vague, inaccurate discussion on micro economics.

This story may never get published, and that's fine.

For what it's worth, the mags are being machined, re -rolled and polished for 80 dollars each, from a professional, customer focussed company that discussed the entire process with me - that equates to $320 for the entire set. A bit different when you shop around.

Those who responded appropriately, thanks very much.

I agree

Hi Mate, I looked back at your original post, and read all the comments and couldn't agree more with you. Whats wrong with people, if they went thru life talking face to face to people like they type, they wouldn't have many friends. Glad you got your wheels sorted. Cheers Drew

HQ Premier Sedan and Kingswood Wagon, HJ Ute, HZ Sedan, WB ute and Stato, what to work on or cruise in today?

and helping people,

Where are you getting them done and was it suggested from here ?

Onya mate, glad u had a win

Onya mate, glad u had a win ;)

pays to shop around

Just shows that sometimes it pays to shop around and do your own research rather than ask on forums.

nice to hear your got them sorted

where did you go neway wheels or ajax wheels or somewhere new

glad they're sorted

but don't entirely agree

If you read your original thread, you got responses of peoples opinions on what you had asked, with explanations of why they thought it was fair.

You were the one who snapped at them, telling them to get over themselves and basically no thanks for the advice / opinions, then cry foul when you cop a bit of backlash over your attitude.

Glad you found a cheaper alternative, but you need to lose the chip!

True and not true.I asked

True and not true.

I asked for an alternative and (I won't go over it again) I copped a barrage because I didn't accept the offer. There was one alternative, the others virtually said....well, we'll move on.

It was a shame because over the seven year build I've had some fantastic advice and some amazing tips.

For those interested, Canterbury Wheels in Bayswater were friendly, honest and professional - without needing to buy a slab for the boss or a meat tray for the missus.

Good feedback. thanks

Thanks for the feedback for Canterbury wheels.
I plan on buying some rims/tyres for the torana and also some mud boots for the Pajero off them shortly.

Glad to hear they are friendly, honest and professional as it is what I expect also.

Cheers,

you'll only get what you pay for sunshine

Like most questions or enquiries posted in any forum particularly when it come's to motor vehicles the first two or three replies will generally give you the answer that you're seeking, from there the posts will then tend to go off topic and or condescend resulting in yet another peeing competition.
But as Mr Nut stated the second paragraph of your initial post left the topic open to a forum debate, not in regards to your question but the exclamation which you stated....
"Having said that I've had ridiculous prices to get them polished and machined up."
"One mob wants 700 clams, they all need re - welding, re-rolling, yada yada yada."

-In saying that $360.00 is a great "estimated price" if that's just for the polishing of your rims (and without quoting the many stipulations regarding the repair of alloy rims) It'd be interesting to know if you are happy with the end result once you have been "invoiced".

-Now in your second forum post you've stated:
"For what it's worth, the mags are being machined, re -rolled"

-If your alloy rims do require repairing and or rerolling ensure that the repair does not compromise the lateral or radial runout as you will encounter balancing issues. Some of the cheap repairers machine the rim at the hub so as to correct the lateral runout, however this in turn will produce a radial runout.
Perhaps what I would have done whilst seeking the various quotes is also enquired about the repair processes that the various rim experts were using. The reason being is that repairing an alloy rim with hydraulic ram upon a workbench is quite a different process to repairing an alloy rim upon a dedicated alloy rim machine, as the latter will enable the user/repairer to check measure the both the radius and lateral runouts throughout the repair process.
"To some or perhaps many cheaper is good" however @ $80.00 per rim I doubt that your repairer has spent the funds required to purchase a dedicated rim repair machine most of which have a purchase price of some $25K plus. You'll most likely find that your nominated repairer is simply using a hydraulic ram and an old large lathe or a milling machine, none of which can guarantee the correct trueness of a rim before, during and after the rim repair process.

Thanks for that - I'll post

Thanks for that - I'll post again when they're all sorted and we'll go from there.

Just for the record, the rims didn't need to be re-rolled, hence my frustration at being taken for a ride.

I understand restoring is expensive, but I, too, have a budget - I can't subsidise some 25K machine overnight.

Without entering a peeing competition

You initially stated at the top of the thread "For what it's worth, the mags are being machined, re -rolled and polished for 80 dollars each, from a professional" And then in your last post you stated "Just for the record, the rims didn't need to be re-rolled, hence my frustration at being taken for a ride" Well, $80.00 to polish an alloy rim is a reasonable and competitive price, however if you were to add the process of rerolling, repairing, welding and machining into the equation then I think that I was probably around the money. Anyway it does pay to shop around and during times like these when the economic climate is at a low there are businesses out there that will prey upon the unsuspecting customer.

cheers......
