you need to get a fuel sender from a late model hq - wb as they changed them in hq your car would be a 73 or ealier i guess and the gauage from a 74 on. also the oil pressure and temp senders are different reistance valves as well so you may need to change them just be care full as they had three differen types for these as well one for the early hq's one for the later and one for hz's and on.

mate it will be the fuel sender as they changed in 74 but it must have been later than i thought. i put a late 74 fuel gauge in to my 73 tonner and it did the same thing. so i got the resistance valves and on the ealier modles they are 0empty 25 half 30full ohms on later they are 73empty 25half 10 full ohms.so when you fill up your tank the guage should go down. i also have the ohms values for the oil and temp senders if you need them

Take your sender and your gauge to an automotive instrument place and have them matched/calibrated to each other.

A new sender is about $28 and it costs about $45 or so to get them matched.

Then you will have the rarest of beasts...an accurate HQ fuel gauge.

Early HQ HAD 2 TYPES OF SENDER UNITS, electronic and magnetic
The colour of the gauge needle tells the type of unit which has
to match the type in the tank. I think this is your empty problem, the other is probably an earth problem
